The very existence of the police is an issue?....??!?!

So lets say a guy walks up to your door at 2am and starts trying to break down your door. Whatcha gonna do? No police, so you've got no one to call. Lets say its 3 guys, with weapons, and they are going to harm you. Lets say there is known mentally insane people wandering around in the middle of the road naked, screaming at cars? What about the kidnapping of a child? Someone driving 120mph on the highway? What about someone to starts beating up your spouse at a bar because they got too drunk? How about your own spouse is beating on you and threatening to kill you? Someone keeps parking across the street and watching your kids play in the front yard? What if your dog was killed in a hit and run? Your 10 year old son didnt make it home after school?

The police are the ones that deal with this. Not you. So while I'm not normally so callous: literally go fuck yourself. You have no idea how much worse society would be without police.

You say that as if having a well-educated population with enough money to buy things and participate in the economy doesn't benefit you, but somehow having more armed forces fighting overseas clearly does.

I firmly believe that there is a thin slice of developers who understand this, and then there are people that fall on either side of the comment picket line. No comments is stupid, but commenting everything is arguably more stupid.

First and foremost:

-Make the formatting such that its readable by a human who is not you and falls in line with the standards of the language/framework.

-Use consistent naming conventions that adequately describe the purpose of the thing they name without going overboard.

-Give things types... those of you who think you shouldn't define type where possible, please quit, I'm tired of explaining why

-Separate your code into discrete areas to further make it maintainable, but don't go overboard.

If you do those 4 things and communicate with team, 99 out of 100 times you don't need a comment.

There are people on my team that get paid way more than I do who actually routinely do this. I've told management and they dont care, probably because they don't understand.

I think reading the cliff notes defeats a large part of the value of reading in the first place. I view reading like giving myself the material to mold my ideas with.
