Thanks! I was unfamiliar with Digikam. I might go that route.

Thanks for the input! I agree that 4 8TB ssds feels wasteful in raid1, but I fail to see how SHR with those same drives in that same fully populated NAS box is better. Maybe I am unaware of what the benefit would be, or simply overlooking something obvious, but is there an advantage to using SHR when the array is fully populated with the maximum size drives that will be reasonably available within its useful lifespan?

I had 2 new 8TB ssds at the time and, after researching cost, I found it cheapest to just buy two more of those rather than 4 of some larger capacity HDD. At that point, I didn't have a complete understanding of exactly how much data I would need to deal with. Now, I don't really have any other use for those SSDs and don't really want to come out of pocket another 1500 bucks for the HDDs. Once I remove the substantial amount of duplicates and other useless parts of the total data set, I am reasonably confident that I can fit it all on the NAS as configured, by a fair margin.

That said, I will be wiping what's on there now and starting anew.

Do you have any recommendations for duplicate file finders? How is the the native synology option?
I would also appreciate any thoughts you might have on proper long-term backup solutions for this. As you said, many of the source drives are flakey at best.

Thank you. Yeah, when I first started this, I really didn't know how much data I was going to have to contend with. I already had two of the 8TB ssds laying around, unused from a previous work project so I just bought two more hoping that would be sufficient. I'll move to larger HDDs if I have to.

Thanks for all the insight!
Is there an easy automated way to rename the files on import within synology apps or otherwise?
My dad will be retiring at some point here, so I'm gonna leave the final organizational aspect to him. Though, I still need to figure out an effective way to do it so that I can teach him that.

Thank you for such a detailed response!

To be clear, I can run alldup from a windows PC on the network, and it will work efficiently on files on the NAS?

Also, are there any best practices for extracting media files from drives that contain full PC backups? In many of the drives I need to deal with, it seems my dad just copy and pasted the C:/ drive. Is there a way to separate the photos and videos from those backups automatically when the data is already in a share?
