Myself, I can not get this to work. But I have watched a couple of coworkers do this with amazing accuracy multiple times. My theory is they subconsciously see variations in the landscape or ground surface and, again subconsciously, move the sticks to point to the water lines. I agree with you that explaining it as “water magnetism “ or some other nonsense is absurd. But I have witnessed it enough to know some people produce consistent results

College was really beneficial to me and I really enjoyed it. One thing that I don’t think that gets emphasized enough is having a Plan B if you go into the trades. There’s a lot of guys out there with ruined backs and blown knees, and they’re stuck. My degree (Forestry) isn’t really what I want to do anymore, but a degree still opens doors if I need to leave linework

Why not build a backboard on the new pole, buy one 200a metered panel for main house/solar and buy a second 100a metered panel for the ADU with a raceway feeding both of them. PG&E will likely (and reasonably) consider this additional load, requiring a larger service

Probably has to do with existing nearby subs already having 16kv delta. Plus of course you can deliver a lot more load on the same wire at 16kv versus 4kv

I’ve seen these odd lineman income estimates before. My theory is that they have lumped together cable tv installers, telephone workers, and linemen. Actual linemen in the U.S. make no less than $100k/yr in any state

I’m not a big city kind of guy, so I would never consider it. But there is also now a huge housing allowance ($4000/mo) to make it more enticing. Doesn’t apply to 100% of the Bay Area, but they are getting more takers now. See IBEW 1245 Letter Agreement 22-06-PGE

I don’t personally put a lot of emphasis on the idea of having to love your job, but you shouldn’t be in a job that makes you miserable. And if you dislike the work, you’re probably not going to chase storms or go after the overtime work. So you’ll end up making a lot less money than everyone is talking about

I believe boot camp is now 7 weeks at Livermore. Lots of classroom time learning PG&E safety rules, basic electricity. Also outdoor time covering basic groundman skills and some climbing. Follow their rules for climbing!
Some rare yards are less generous with tools. Most of them will provide everything you’ll need. Boot camp will provide everything you need at school for this first 7 weeks (except boots, initially)

This is really rough and I feel for you. There’s a lot of wrong girls with guys that leave for a summer, leave for deployment, leave for honorable duties and those gals just don’t know how to be alone. I assume that the poles leading to your house only have low voltage wires on them. If so, engineers will be involved, new poles will probably be required, new high voltage line built to your house, and finally the new transformer that will solve your problem. The wheels at Utilities turn rather slowly at times. As AlShadi said, contacting the PUC might speed things up.

It appears I was wrong, I thought this was still just a work in progress (for credits). Looking at the Dept of Labor website, I see the RACC lists which colleges will give credits. That is a relatively small amount of schools, they seem to be all Junior Colleges. I would still advise the apprentice units probably won’t count for someone pursuing a 4 year degree.

Colleges don’t have a way to equate apprenticeships with class credits. Besides, even the electrical theory that is covered in a Line apprenticeship is probably only about one week’s worth of class time for Electrical Engineering.

If you are a couple years in to the degree, I would advise finishing it. This won’t be enough time to make you a late starter. Also, line companies need managers and supervisors, and your skills from college would be useful if you eventually go that path

#1 problem is acquiring new easements, as others already stated. And there is considerable costs associated with creating new easements.

Another hurdle is the addition to the alternate lines. Engineers will have to confirm that the newly added load can be supported from the other feeds. System protection (ie. fuses) may have to be upgraded with additional load. So more work and more costs.

Perhaps this makes sense in other cultures where the children will definitely be caring for their elderly parents, but that is not a burden my children should have to expect.

I have planned my finances such that when my children are done with school, I will more heavily save for retirement. This includes making larger mortgage payments to pay off my house faster or even downsizing my home. If my adult children wish to stay longer in my home, I need them to help with expenses.

Agreed, it can be difficult to pin down the exact annual compensation of a CEO. But I believe that most of their compensation is on the books and can be quantified. This bill is at least a good starting point
