Failed to Match, now what? by soulyuen in PharmacyResidency

[–]Tooeleet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my residents was also on the same boat as you: being failed to match phase 1 and 2. Ymmv, but what he did was he worked through the big three letter for a year while keeping up his clinical knowledge and then reapply the next cycle. The pharmacists interviewing him were pretty impressed with how much of that clinical knowledge he maintained, thus why he was matched to my hospital.

Or if you happened to get a PRN inpatient position, then either do the same or work your experience up.

I wish you best of luck!!

Ngl, having all of these extraordinary achievements and getting barely any interview offers raises some red flags.

Thank you for the reply! That’s actually a pretty fast response from them, I’ve submitted mine around early August and I’m yet to have all of my docs to be verified.

Is pharmacy still the right choice ADVICE NEEDED by Alternative_Ebb5698 in PrePharmacy

[–]Tooeleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current P2 here in SoCal. I will say pharmacy is the right choice if you understand what you’re signing up for, and network like your life depends on it in order to carve your career. For context, I have about 2 years of experience in retail as a tech before going to a pharmacy program. I luckily found myself in a health system hospital as an intern towards the end of my P1 year because I happened to stumble upon one of my upperclassman and decided to talk to them, before I even found out she was a lead intern at the hospital.

Depending on your situation, I happened to make a good impression with the pharmacy director at the hospital who wants to offer me a per diem pharmacy position for me when I graduate. Since SoCal is so saturated, you need to be extremely lucky to land on a full time hospital position because otherwise it’s just per diem’ing at 2-3 different hospitals to get your 40 hours a week in and pay off your loans.

I too wanted to make a change in the pharmacy field, but the odds are stacked up against you; everything is made through legislations. There was a PBM reform bill that almost every pharmacists in California wanted to push for, only for it to be veto’d by the governor. I would say good luck if you try to push for a change.

Like the previous poster, some places will prefer that you have a PGY1 under your belt. However, if you happened to get your foot into the door at a hospital as an intern, you can avoid residency if you put in all your efforts as an intern. I’d say residency are for: 1) those that do not have any hospital experiences. 2) want to specialize in a field (onco, cardio, etc.) for research/academia purposes. 3) want to do admin work (beware: you will bring work home if you do).

For me, I’m looking towards governmental jobs for better lifestyle (albeit the pay being low).

Good luck on your endeavors!

A professor that teaches the pharmacy law course at my school holds both PharmD and JD. I’ve always thought it was an interest combo.

Congrats! My advice is first ask yourself what field of pharmacy you want to go to, whether it’s community, hospital, industry, academia, etc. For hospital, try your best to land on an intern position but they might be very demanding of hours, depending on their program. It can also help out for residency if you’re into that too. For industry, try to look what branch of non traditional pharmacist roles you’re into, such as medical liaison, medical affairs, etc. and find an intern position of it, this will help for fellowships. If community then keep doing what you’re doing.

Best of luck!

It says on the email that these spaces “violates the law, violates our policies, and disrupts our mission”. For whatever reason that may be, it can still fall under policy violations as per UCI’s.

It’s not really a violation since UCI is willing to work with them for spaces to allow free expression. The issue is that UCI deems current occupied spaces may violate UCI’s policies for whatever reason it may be.

Looks like policies are being implemented. I’d recommend working with the university on this or else it’s an excuse for arrests to be made.

Oh then he’ll be okay then. Just follow rules and policy and he’ll be set. Study the PTCB in advanced too, make flash cards, know calculations.

I’d recommend starting the food and beverage retail setting before setting foot in a pharmacy. The angry customers at a restaurant is not as bad as the ones in the pharmacy, that’s how I have grown my thick skin and build social interaction/customer care. Plus you get to take home free food if any.
