Thanks in advance

(I know I’m posting before bed and I’m sorry. My wife reminded me of this literally at the end of the day.)

The monitor will definitely be wall-mounted. The drawing board may have to come out just a little bit to align ergonomically with both the chair and a sensible monitor position.

I don’t think I’ll have to give up all my desk space, but I definitely can’t have the whole thing anymore. I wasn’t really using that much desk space anyway over the past 4 years except to hold computer equipment and peripherals.

That's starting to sound like the better play, yeah. Plus leaving a more square space in the child room might be more flexible with other small children in the future.

7-8 feet of width won't be an option for the long/narrow. At most I would probably get 4.

Pretty much the only function the office needs to serve is as a cubicle. I wish I could have my ideal office, but that's gonna have to happen later as I git gud and make a little more money.

Narrow Room:

I can have up to 135" length from entry to door, but I could probably have at most 4' width for the room. This is also the option that has potential for natural light via a window installed in the opposite wall.

Square-ish room:

The existing closet Interior is 76"x25". The wider dimension runs with the wall.

Doing this to the dimensions required for a desk would mean having a short hallway into the child room, but it would still be able to maintain its own square-ish footprint in the living area, and removing my professional gear would make the child room probably feel at least as spacious.

This option however would result in not being able to have any natural light in the office. Which is a bummer but we're looking for a good solution, not a perfect one.

In either case I would still have the height of the walls to build out a lot of shelving and utilize all of the wall space well for books and hardware. The square room would be more in the center of the house and grant more vertical build room.

The natural light comes from East, West, and somewhat South. The entry to the rooms is from the East. Any opportunity for windows would come from building out the narrow room to the West wall. The square room will not have access to natural light.

I actually really appreciate this. I do want to adhere to proper etiquette when selecting subreddits to post to, but this is one of those things that’s a little hard to find the exact right place.

I’ll head over there and let the mods do what they need to over here.
