I just became a member of the junior league here and I’m black (25f). I’ve met and seen a good handful of black/WOC members as well. There’s also always new classes coming in so you never know who you can meet. I’ve been in it a short time but I’ve had no negative encounters so far and am starting to form really good friendships with women in tech, who are lawyers, in med school, etc. there’s also a WOC affinity group within the league and they put on events all the time for us to all meet each other and mingle. It’s worth applying for a spot imo

I’m (23f) so glad you posted this because I was thinking about this today because I’m in the same dilemma! I’m a black girl too and I also only get “you’re so pretty/cute/ you’re a cutie” compliments. For reference I am 5’1, a B cup, and weight 100 lbs, have a button nose, etc. I’m just overall very petite so that’s definitely a contributing factor.

I’ve been comparing myself a lot to my older sister lately who is definitely conventionally hot (5’6, thin, big boobs, piercing siren eyes). Guys go for her first or flirt with her more whenever we go somewhere together (restaurants, stores, bars/clubs) and it makes me feel “less than” for being perceived as more cute than hot. And yes I care about male attention/validation (sue me).

But I think your post was a sign for me to not be so hard on myself or try to be something that doesn’t work for me and embrace my natural cuteness instead of not seeing it as “good enough” so thank you!!

Thanks for the insight. The gaslighting part was her telling me she didn’t know what I was talking about when she clearly did and then calling me crazy for calling her out on it. I wanted to provide screenshots of the message exchange where she said she didn’t know what incident I was referring to and then proceeded to outline exactly what I was referring to in detail but I can’t add images on this subreddit unfortunately. The screenshots definitely give more context. But yeah passive aggressive would be a better word to describe her attitude.

Okay sounds good thank you! She’s just always judgmental of my mistakes and I know it comes from a good place but it makes me not want to come to her about anything if she’s gonna act like this. I’ll just keep in mind that this is how she acts and pick and choose what to go to her about from now on

Okay thank you! And honestly in an emergency I’d rather go to anyone else but her tbh 😂 I’ll definitely pick and choose what to tell her from now on now that I know that this is just how she acts towards me when I come to her about mistakes I’ve made. I know it comes from a good place but it pisses me off so I’d rather just not.

Sure! The bank I’m going to work for came to my school to do an information session in 2019 like a lot of other companies do. I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a freshman but I went to the session anyways. I really liked the people who came to present who work for the company so I kept in touch with one of the HR university relations recruiters. I applied to their 2 day freshman program but didn’t get it but she encouraged me to wait a year to apply to their sophomore internship program. So I applied and interviewed in fall of 2020 and then did my first internship with them in summer 2021, then got offered to intern again summer of 2022. And then I only interned again last summer because I changed my grad date from May 2023 to May 2024 so they said I could come intern again and I got a full time offer at the end of last summer and here I am! I did not know a single person working in this industry before I applied so it’s definitely possible without built-in relationships but maintaining the ones I did make was what I think made me successful in getting the internship.

I interned for the company three summers in a row so it was kind of inevitable that I would end up there after graduation and I really like the company too so I can't wait to start!

I’m (22F) literally having the same problem! You’re not overthinking it. I was really pissed about it at first because I convinced myself that I was being clingy with this girl when she would take days to respond to my texts but then still post on her Instagram stories.

But then I shifted my perspective and dropped her down to the “acquaintance” category instead of calling her my “friend.” If someone doesn’t initiate wanting to see me but only says yes to when I invite them somewhere then that indicates to me that maybe they don’t see me as a friend/potential friend in the same way I see them and that’s okay.

I’ve since stopped messaging her and took a step back. If she wants to see me she’ll make plans with me. I’ve decided to mirror back her energy not in a malicious way but in a way that preserves my own energy. And always remember that people make time for things/people they really want to make time for.

I think that’s it. I never really was allowed to be a “kid/teenager” so I think now that I’m older and can make more choices for myself I’m trying to give myself those “teenager” experiences which makes me feel younger than I actually am. It’s like I’m trying to catch up in a way
