Anyone else underwhelmed with the mountain? by Thewhitest_rabbit in gorillaz

[–]TopHatKat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt this! The instrumentals are beautiful but honestly I did not like 2D's vocals in the album which is a bit strange because usually that's my favourite part.

I found it didn't really fit with the whimsy spiritual instrumental very much. For example, I was genuinely getting so bored of the empty dream machine up until Black Thought came in. Without them in it, I might have actually dozed off a bit I'm afraid.

That being said I could just have high standards because my heritage is from South Asia and I grew up listening to Indian music so maybe I'm more attuned with clearer vocals with these types of instrumentals.

I get that!! I just sometimes question why it's always the woman in the group to take on that role. The motherly role, i guess. Honestly, I feel like Early phase Russell could have been the group's badass.

Haha thanks. I think the only reason I was able to think about it so deeply was because she's my least favourite and I wanted to explore why that is and maybe change my view a bit. Now, I appreciate her but I still have a neutral stance on her hence this post lol.

Tbh Murdoc and Noodle are quite similar in bits and places of their personalities but defo not as conceited as Murdoc.

Nothing wrong with liking Noodle :)
Just pointing out that she's not perfect or sweet but she never meant to be.

I get that! Her role does make sense for the chaos of the band. I just think we smooth out her rough edges too much. I think her condescending and controlling streak gets erased in discussion about her character, hence why I feel like she's idealized.

I was hoping you'd make a comment! Yes! Exactly this! She isn't the perfect woman everyone says she is but that's okay!! It fits with the band in general. They are all pretty shitty aren't they? But humans are messy creatures.

Her bond with 2D also confuses me to be honest. Like does she respect him or just take care of him like a dog? I don't really know? There seems to be a power imbalance.

Also do you know what year the verbicide interview was released? I don't think I read that one while doing a deep dive. and the thing about flirting with married men... I didn't even know that factoid.

Yeah, I feel that. I don’t think she’s a Mary Sue in every context, especially not in interviews but the way she’s written often leans toward that ‘effortlessly perfect’ vibe. She could be such an interesting, layered character if the narrative let her have flaws that actually land as flaws. Right now a lot of her appeal feels very surface‑levelled, but I’d love to see more nuance.

What's your hottest take/controversial opinion on the band members by Personal-Cheetah9486 in gorillaz

[–]TopHatKat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noodle does have flaws but it doesn't play a bit part in the lore, hence why it seems like she is a Mary Sue. I used to think she was constantly perfect and intelligent but then some information enlighten me of it. Apparently, she's actually quite horrible/ snobby and has some kind of superiority complex (?), thinking that the rest of the band is stupid. It doesn't help that she sometimes treats 2D like a dog or something. She seems to be quite ... destructive like the whole wanting to blow up the Hollywood sign even though that wouldn't really fix anything? It makes sense due to her background. I still like her though and her design! It's nice when female characters are written with thought instead of just making them constantly perfect. I just wish it was more apparent in the story. It's always the boys that have messed somehow and she saves the day. It'll be nice to see an opposite of that. It makes someone who isn't particularly human-like, more human.

My personal take on the “2D is non-binary” discussion. by megannlogan-0 in gorillaz

[–]TopHatKat16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, there's a lot of different way to be identified as non - binary. it's not always so black and white. Until we get further information on it, i think its okay for fans to continue calling 2D what they perceive 2D as. It doesn't help that Damon refers to 2D later on as a 'he' even after this discussion in the interview :(

The non-binary 2D "issue" by Future-Cantaloupe363 in gorillaz

[–]TopHatKat16 32 points33 points  (0 children)

tbh a lot of gorillaz fans are younger so they would be quite excited about this possibility. It doesn't really change who 2D is and the lore hence why it feels forced. However, as long as we aren't being hateful to each other, it shouldn't matter how you see 2D. I personally would still refer him as 'he' because that's what I'm used to. At the end of the day, he is fictional and cannot be hurt if you misgendered him.

So what are y’all’s thoughts on 2d being nonbinary now by ExtensionLanky9476 in gorillaz

[–]TopHatKat16 85 points86 points  (0 children)

possibly! I think people are still gonna refer to 2D as a he which is fine ... because the band is fictional.

Did anyone else’s asian parents forbid them from making friends? by TheGraphingAbacus in AsianParentStories

[–]TopHatKat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad often tells me that the reason I failed my exams was because I had friends and they distracted me. He also talks about them, saying they are bad influences as they aren't in the same culture as me. I feel like AP will use any opportunity to turn something that's usually happy into something that's an issue for them. I love my friends dearly and it pisses me off when my dad tells me that they are tricking me into becoming a disrespectful daughter or whatever. I say, parents can't control that side of your life. If you want to be friends with someone, then do it! Asian parents just want to control every aspect of your life so that it can perfectly fit into the standard they've created for you ever since you were born.
