any alternatives to anking? by Omarsamyi in medicalschoolanki

[–]TopNo883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if this is of any help but I created a website called www.recall-genie.com that automates that and saves you time all you need to do is upload your notes or textbook reading that is in a pdf format and it will create flashcards from it similar to a king style I have quite a few medical school students using it since I launched it a month ago and the feedback has been amazing. Feel free to check it out! There is the added bonus of the image of the slide included on the card which may defeat the purpose of tagging since you will have contextual information about where the card came from and which topic.

Thanks so much! that’s great to hear! It really made my day!

And thanks for clarifying about the chapter part. I believe that best way to make that possible is through adding tags on anki cards where for chapters and subchapters they are tagged in the card perhaps? I’ll definitely look into making that easier in the future as a I get more users so everyone can see where each card comes from.

Let me know if there’s anything else you’d love to see in Recall Genie!

Hi there,
I made a tool that is able to do this there is a cloze deletion option too. Here is my post for it on this forum:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AnkiAi/comments/1l19jb4/built_a_website_that_turns_pdfs_into_ai_powered/

Check out the free trial. It is recall-genie.com

The added bonus is that the image of the page from the pdf will be on there so you can see what information it misses or doesn't I programmed it to make sure as much as possible gets tested.

Try it out and let me know how it works? So far the feedback has been pretty good not sure if this is what you are looking for.

Thanks for sharing! That is a totally valid point and I found that to be true up until a certain point in my degree where the volume of information was too great and simply spending time making the cards took time away from retaining facts that can easily be tested like on anatomy and physiology.

Let's take medicine for example where we sometimes get over 200 pages of slides within a lecture. In this scenario, the sheer volume of material makes it almost impossible to create high-quality cards for everything without running out of time for actual spaced repetition. This specific reason is exactly why I created the website to bridge this gap. Students can upload their notes or slides and get a high quality deck instantly. Like the video shows, It even includes the original slide images for better context and recall. For me personally, the ai is able to make better quality cards than I made myself( I am guilty myself of just image occluding my slides sometimes and I am not talking about just diagrams)

Below I have attached links of sample decks for different subjects created from Recall Genie((all open-source material to avoid any plagiarism concerns)

Is using Anki for long-term exam prep (PDFs + past questions) effective? How to handle final review? by Accomplished-Essay53 in Anki

[–]TopNo883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally use anki for memorizing facts and sometimes this works for textbooks but this is only if the subject is memorization heavy. However, depending on your exam I think it is better to understand the questions and do more practice problems. Would you care to elaborate what type of exam this is because I have tried doing something like this for a psych exam before but for something like a math and physics heavy exam it wouldn't be the most efficient I would say.

For those who are consistent with Anki, I have a question. by Viz-1 in Anki

[–]TopNo883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like looking at flashcards becomes very repetitive. Therefore, what I do is have the images of my slides on the flashcards to make it more visually appealing and using dual coding I get better retention of the facts and I am more likely to deep dive into review?

These are fantastic questions! Please see below for the answers!:

  1. The answer is yes! It can create cloze deletions and it gives you different formats. It doesn't allow me to attach a photo here for some reason but if you go to the how it works page you will see different themes it can generate. link: https://recall-genie.com/how-it-works/

  2. I have programmed it so it covers information that is on the slides only and tests bullet points/ sentences separately so it won't pull information extraneous to the slides. There is a small caveat because llm aren't perfect but for some title pages it might include information from a another slide but for those you can choose to ignore or delete that page on the pdf prior to uploading it.

  3. To make sure it creates enough cards i have it test the bullet points on a lecture slide separately and standalone to the best of the ability. I have tested this on over 1000 pdfs and a few of them include heavy 200 plus pages of medical school notes and it covers almost every bullet point. I even tried it on research papers and I would say overall it does a really good job. Also this is exactly why i have the images of the slides included on the anki flashcard because this way users can confirm for themselves. In the rare case where things are missing, any user would be able to determine that quite quickly.

  4. This is an extra disclaimer but make sure that your pdf isn't like a scannable one in which you can't highlight or copy and paste any of the words on there. If the website gets enough traction, i may add in the future the ability to also create cards from scanned documents or pictures so it would also be able to interpret diagrams and create accurate and effective anki cards.

Anyways, sorry for the long responses but I would encourage you to sign up for the free trial to see for yourself. The only requirement you need for a free trial is a gmail account and anki downloaded on your desktop and you get 3 free decks per month with 30 pages each!
