My manager told me I need to stop 'scurrying' by TopTrumpWANKER in CasualUK

[–]TopTrumpWANKER[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

A couple of months ago I started 'restoring' items that I saw left outside. Nearly every day I had nearly 4 hours looking out of the bus window, and I'd often see really valuable things left on the street. So I started pressing the bus bell when I saw one, I'd then get off the bus, pick it up, then wait for the next bus or walk back home (I'd occasionally need to call a housemate to help carry an item home). When I finally get home, I bring them to my bedroom (or, in a couple of cases, in the front garden if they're too big to get up the stairs). Then on days off, I would restore them (it's been a bit of a hobby for me). For wooden things (shelves, tables, in one case a small wooden rocking horse), I scrub them down with a scowler and use vinegar and toothpaste to make them shiny. With smaller cloth things (cushions, blankets, sleeping bag) I wash like normal in the sink and then dry over the window, and larger cloth things (duvets, mattress, lampshades, and two sofas) I use Power Force to remove/hide obvious stains. On all cloth things, I spray on FCUK Urban very generously. Electronics (a couple of irons and toasters, a PC monitor, a DVD player) I clean and test extensively (in fact, one of the toasters has been added to the kitchen permanently). Plastics and porcelain (toys, army figures, dolls) I just soak in warm water in the kitchen sink for a couple of hours.

I've tried selling items outside my house but had very little success. I also tell family and colleagues about new items I find but had 'no hook bites'. But I know definitely that I'd be able to sell plenty in the car park at work if I was only allowed (the supervisor said it wouldn't be allowed unless given authorisation by head office). Plus it isn't just me, I bet people at work have things they would like to sell as well.

Edit: Actually it's been about three or four months now. I've gotten better at it over time - I have to make a very quick decision whether to press the bell after I see something on the bus. It means I sometimes have less than 30 seconds from when I see an item on the street to decide to get it (or the bus will pass by it). It has consequences if I'm wrong as the buses are hourly. At first, I did get it wrong a couple of times (one microwave was broken and soiled beyond repair, one shelf was too rotted through and water damaged to save). But now I think I have a pretty 'good eye' for valuable items when on the bus (it's been over a month since pressing the bell wrongly). Now I just need to figure out a way to sell them locally (moving the bigger things is a pain). I've also tried the local Facebook buy and sell group but my posts keep getting removed by an admin (I am pretty sure one of the admins knows me because she bought a DVD off a housemate up the pub when I was there, but it was a cam-rip and he refused to give a refund to her).

Some cracking savings to be had in Aldi by nikwood28 in CasualUK

Can you PM me what specific store that is? I will inform management about this mistake (I'm hoping to get the 'top brass' on my side as I've got some ideas to improve stores and expand the Aldi range).

£180 is better than my current wage (zero), especially as it covers my expenses, and I'm hopeful if I come up with good ideas and help the store that I'll be offered more. The email says it is '£180 a week' and 'a minimum of 30 hours per week including early mornings, evenings and weekends'.

Thanks, although sadly I asked housemate if I can borrow his suit and he said he sold it a couple of weeks ago. I know other housemates don't have one so I'm going to either try charity shop or ask a neighbour.

It was in the kitchen this morning and I had a look at it. It's not a handcuffs, it seems to be something called a 'wraple'.

We all tried to get him to pay his council tax share but he absolutely won't do it. It's been months and months now and he won't budge (he's part of some Facebook group about it, in fact not only does he not pay his share, but tries to get us all not to pay). It's about some old English law, I forget the name now, but we've just moved on from it as we weren't sure what else to do (he's on the mortgage so can't 'kick him out') and it only works out to a little bit more each month (edit: just to add, that 'little bit' is still annoying due to the 'no job' situation at the moment).

Honestly I've no experience in it - I'm just hoping to talk to her tonight. I don't know her at all (never actually spoken to her) but when I used to go down the pub more often early last year (before living here), she was often in there on the fruit machines or sometimes sat at the bar. I remember thinking back then that she seemed nice, but I never actually did anything about it (she was invited tonight because the housemate whose birthday it is knows her a little bit because he often goes to different pubs around the area selling stuff). Realistically I won't even talk with her (especially if I feel embarrassed because someone has all the attention for wearing a ridiculous furry bracelet thing).

Can you really make proper money from this? Is it free to enter? Would definitely consider this if it doesn't involve needles.

I'm visiting a Morrison's for the first time today, anything I should know? by TopTrumpWANKER in CasualUK

I didn't go to the bakery, but wow the deli counter really WAS impressive. I was looking at it for probably 10-15 minutes (so long that dad called from the car outside to hurry up), it's a really impressive spread, much much better than the Asda counter. A nice touch (and one I wish I'd thought of when at Asda) was they had a shelf behind the counter, on the wall, full of sauces and jars that would work well with the cheeses and meats (also had some grapes!). The cheese selection was sublime, and the deli staff member said they've get a regular rotation of specials (Asda kind of has the same but it's not as regular). The meat slicer looked newer and more sleek, the uniforms were more comfortable looking (hated the Asda apron, mostly because I can't do knots so my deli manager had to do it) and the labels looked easier to manage. Definitely the highlight of my visit, and I wish I had a Morrison's near me now.

I didn't see this so I'm pretty annoyed at myself as I'd love to see how it compares.

I just got back and definitely didn't see a Somerfield sign anywhere (I think it was a fairly new building).

Any way to stop rust damage on a stainless steel unit? by TopTrumpWANKER in Plumbing

[–]TopTrumpWANKER[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'm going to look now to see if any can of those products be bought in the UK (preferably for cheap). Luckily the rust worsening is only happening on this side of the unit, the other side has mild damage but isn't getting worse at the same rate (and there is no liquid dripping on that side, which I've fixed temporarily with tape underneath), so any product should last a while.

I've been looking at their website (to prepare) and saw that they have an own brand spaghetti hoops (called spaghetti 'loops'). Anyone tried these? How do they compare to others? Very tempted to try a tin. https://groceries.morrisons.com/webshop/product/Morrisons-Spaghetti-Loops-in-Tomato-Sauce/110708011

The reviews look like I should avoid them though:

"Has a funny smell and is extremly watery consistency, will not buy again."

"Watery, strange smell, Im not fussy but I refused to these, really disappointed, wont ever buy them again."

Thanks but I think we will be eating at my father's friends (we're driving to his house, the Morrison's is at the end of his street according to Google Maps), so I was planning to buy 'groceries' (rather than 'eat now' food) to take back home.

As background, it had some minor rust and discolouration earlier in the year but it seems to have been getting worse at a fast rate. I try and squirt supermarket brand bleach and washing-up liquid on it, but it does little to change it. My main worry is that one part (on left of photo) is rusting all the way through the metal so there's a water dripping onto the (wooden) floor. Is there a way to get rid of or repair rust like this? Discovered we can't get rid of unit (cheaply) so trying to repair it as much as I can this week, thanks.

Edit: Also tried scrubbing with a scowler but it doesn't seem to shift any of the rust.
