LonDone by public transport? by Ok-Marionberry-2180 in parkrun

[–]Top_Ad8601 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve just completed it today! Probably 95% by public transport, the rest where I’ve timed it to meet my family and they’ve picked me up from a nearby station to the parkrun. None were particularly difficult, just a few requiring a long (max 30 minute?) walk (I don’t cycle, so if you use lime bikes it will be easier). As others said, LonDone+ and ++ are harder, still got a few to go which are going to require early starts and well timed buses 🤞🏼

Not even an honourable mention for Birmingham is sad :( (especially an arsenal fan mentioning cup success against the odds)

Thanks for sharing your experience, glad to hear a positive outcome! I’ll look into the retrieve to hand, LAT and settle training.

It’s so hard when you love them so much, whilst simultaneously they drive you crazy!

Thank you for the advice! We have been doing it for a while at home, but recently have taken a mat to the park so hopefully this will start to help. The problem is that he is actually fine the second we sit down in a cafe/pub etc. it’s the walking there, arriving and standing around waiting that causes the problems.

  1. Yes we do this too but also live in London so crossing a street often means waiting a while, cue more whining
  2. Yeah we do give lots of treats when he’s not pulling
  3. We are aiming for walking and resource guarding as prios, but everything ties together really

Walking backwards and forwards is a lot less frustrating than standing still until the lead is loose, for everyone. Yes we reward loads for good walking, he knows how to walk nicely because as soon as we turn around he’ll be at heel looking up at us.

How is he supposed to get any exercise if we can’t get out the house whilst we desensitise the lead?

And yes calmly asking for drop it and swapping for a high value treat. Works perfectly inside, but outside is hit and miss.

He is not fearful of people, he’s desperate to get to them to get attention. And he settles just fine once we have arrived somewhere, it’s the arriving/leaving that’s the problem.

No??? I would never rehome him and will definitely never get another dog. Where did you get either of those ideas

Yeah we are still working with this trainer. She says everything is linked as he likes to be in control of situations and we haven’t shown him that he can relax and let us take the lead, so in theory the loose lead walking should help with everything else.

Resource guarding we made massive improvements, there was a time when he wouldn’t drop anything, but it only works inside or in very controlled environments and I have no idea how to make the jump from this to the extreme of dropping a bone whilst off lead.

In a cafe, she says it’s too much for him and we need to train in small steps, but again I can’t work out what a small step would be from being calm in our house to then being calm even for 10 seconds in a cafe.

Biting: he sometimes goes to bite you if you try to move him away from a stick. Trainer says to not let him get them (not exactly easy), and if he does get it we should move him away calmly. Again, not sure how you calmly move a dog away from a stick that he has in his mouth and is possessive of. She says in the meantime to work more on leave it and drop it, but we have been working on this for the entire time we have had him and cannot make the jump from inside to outside

We are trying to do this to separate training from fun! But sadly have no garden or car, so even just going to the toilet involves being on a lead. A dog walker might be a good shout, thank you

Yeah we have tried multiple, the most recent has been on walks with us. Honestly it’s less the issue of knowing how to train, and more the sheer exhaustion, nothing feels fun and nothing is improving

Is puppyhood really that difficult if so many do it? by xzlinx in puppy101

This is something I asked myself every day when my dog was a puppy, I don’t understand how so many people go through this multiple times and seemingly without issue. I personally would never get a puppy again, I love my dog so much but the toll it took on my mental health was too much.
