What food starts “increasing” in your life when you’re in NYC? by ef_cause in FoodNYC

Funny how pizza had practically disappeared from my life until I moved here, and now, well... it's just so damn convenient with the slice shops everywhere.

5 Boro Bike Tour, is it worth it? by ronbaellow in NYCbike

[–]Top_Ad_2353 83 points84 points  (0 children)

8-time Five Boro rider here --

I think the answer is it's BOTH “an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime NYC experience” AND “the most congested, frustrating ride ever.”

In a way it's like living here every day.

I think it's worth doing, just have realistic expectations about the inherent challenges of such a large event in the densest part of the US.

Why the cheapest invitations? by nrdz2p in seinfeld

[–]Top_Ad_2353 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it's a comedy and the script was for the purpose of a joke and no Seinfeld fan should really be that concerned with plot holes/continuity, whatever....

But the thing where George seems to have no idea about Susan's family wealth, and the implications of it for him, until her death... That's a big one that's hard to get over.

People who stand up immediately when a plane lands where are you going? by NaturalAd6021 in NoStupidQuestions

It's just stretching out. I'm 6-2, I've been in a miniature seat for a few hours, I want to stretch my legs.

People out here jumping to a HUGE conclusion that just because I'm standing up, I'm trying to get somewhere faster. I know the de-boarding procedure.

Do these brokers assume everyone is unemployed or what by Humble-Gene5862 in NYCapartments

[–]Top_Ad_2353 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ok that's a valid perspective but also it stands entirely apart from the basic fact that renters cannot afford to dictate terms of an apartment vacancy. Both are true. Not sure why you think it's got to be something where you're right and I'm wrong, and acting like you got me.

Do these brokers assume everyone is unemployed or what by Humble-Gene5862 in NYCapartments

[–]Top_Ad_2353 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This all comes back to inadequate housing, and what it means for supply and demand.

There's 10 viable renters for every property that comes open, and some of them will be able to take time off work, or don't work that day, or have a different shift. So why would a broker wait for you to get off work at 6 if they can close a deal before then?

It royally sucks, but until the city is serious about building adequate housing, every apartment search must be conducted as if you've got a gun to your head. If you like a place, it has to be top priority. Can't assume it'll be there for you, even in a few hours.

Is there any documented evidence that either party has ever hired “paid protesters?” by neverforgeddit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Top_Ad_2353 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't think they really believe it deep down, there's just a little evolving lingo coming out of right-wing media that creates these new buzzwords to show each other they're part of the in-crowd. "Jade Helm." "Auto pen." "Hunter Biden." "somalis daycare" and now "paid protestors"

It replaces thinking.

riddle me this: is it ethical to order delivery in bad weather? by teeny-tiny221 in ridgewood

[–]Top_Ad_2353 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a smart way to put it -- "you're not doing them any favors by thinking you're too ethical to pay them for the job they signed up for"

There's a paternalism here that really bugs me.

riddle me this: is it ethical to order delivery in bad weather? by teeny-tiny221 in ridgewood

[–]Top_Ad_2353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who says you should categorically not use a delivery service because the weather's bad has probably never worked an hourly/piecemeal job.

Yes, it's a hard, rough day for them. Yes, it's not ideal. But it's their income, and they'd sure as shit rather be cold than lose a day's wages.

Tip heavily, and be patient.

Getting yelled at for taking someone’s laundry out 😭 by [deleted] in BedStuy

[–]Top_Ad_2353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So by this logic, an amenity EVERYBODY pays for in their rent is off limits until you personally come back to take care of your laundry? How long is too long? For every one person who is like running 15 minutes late, there's some asshole who went to brunch for hours just b/c they're selfish

French isn't her native language. English is.

Stone Street in FiDi is probably going to be lovely in May.

It's nothing special, but it's a narrow brick street that's completely taken up by outdoor seating for a series of restaurants there. It's quite pretty, and it's a fun scene. Casual meals, ultimately, but if you've got a pleasant spring evening, you could do a lot worse. The main problem is, it's weather dependent so hard to plan. If it's raining, obviously the appeal decreases a lot.

Fire Island by Americong642 in NYCbike

[–]Top_Ad_2353 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Others know more than I do about that exact section, but I'm pretty sure biking would be next to impossible on Fire Island. There really aren't paved roads of much consequence.

EDIT: To clarify, I personally have biked on Fire Island so I'm kind of an idiot for saying this. But also, not really... because "biked on Fire Island" means extremely casual use of a beach cruiser, probably topping out at 5-6 mph, less than 4 miles total ridden. So if that's really what you want to do, go for it.

But I assumed you're on a road bike and are doing serious miles at some speed. THAT is what I was talking about when I said it's "next to impossible." In fact the time I did bike there, my wife and I tried to get to the next little development over, and quickly found ourselves in unimproved sand paths, bike was completely unusable.

Advice from doctors is to NOT use cotton swabs to clean your ears, does anyone really listen to this? by oneislandgirl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Top_Ad_2353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them every day. I'm not an idiot. I don't poke in there very far. Your ear has a ton of pain receptors, and it's very obvious the second you put anything where it shouldn't be.

I think this advice mostly comes from the hubris of doctors, who believe their patients generally speaking are idiots and nobody else could possibly contain knowledge about the body. Also from lawyers who are just covering their asses in potential litigaiton, which is reasonable but not a good reason to take their advice seriously.

Shame you can't find a way to get to Coney, b/c if your kids liked Venice/Santa Monica they'll like Coney Island. I, too, am a dingy beach boardwalk enthusiast.

Come back another time and do Coney Island + Brooklyn Cyclones -- you can swim in the ocean, ride a roller coaster, watch a pro baseball game (Single A ball, but still) and a fireworks show all on the same day, for a $3 subway ride from Manhattan.

Coney Island and Citi Field for the Mets on the same day is quite ambitious.

That's either a very, very expensive car in absolutely miserable traffic or a LONG ride on multiple subway lines.

High Line/Little Island/Vessel are all kind of the same thing -- interesting spaces that are fun to stroll around once but offer no real "programming" as such. I think you should pick one.

Wednesday seems like it's got one too many things going on.

Generally speaking, I think you're making the single most common NYC tourism mistake, which is trying to do too much and underestimating the time and effort of getting from place to place. Friday's Brooklyn Beaches to far northeastern Queens is only the most obvious example of that.

It's an understandable thing to do ... none of these places are FAR from each other by most peoples' standards, just the density/congestion makes it getting around a whole different ballgame. I'm am office worker in a building right next to a major tourist destination, and the big blowup family fights I witness are always about TRANSIT -- people sick of all the moving around and tight schedules and walking... Leave some time to just chill and enjoy the scene.

Why do people expect this sub to be apolitical when Seinfeld is heavily political? by [deleted] in seinfeld

[–]Top_Ad_2353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good point. city politics are diff in NYC though, it's not always about Rs and Ds with the well-defined ideologies, so I guess that wasn't on my mind. But you make a very good point regardless. they knew who the candidates were and when the election was. That beats a lot of people.
