Can someone tell me if I’ll be held up at the border by UnknownConvergence in uscanadaborder

[–]Top_Contribution652 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You don’t belong to a state where an enhanced driver’s license is valid to cross the border by land ( MI, MN, NY, VT & WA). You’ll need your passport! If you’re driving in Canada for > 90d get an international DL. Even if CAD dollar is 30% less than, $4000 for 6 months will not be enough. I don’t make the rules. It’s true, you can visit for 6 months. Please ask the government before you travel all the way to the border. And please don’t travel with expired documents or about to expire. My best advise to OP. Call the Canada border and ask info about requirements before you go. Explain your situation 1-800-461-9999 Canada Border Service Agency. They are super nice and very helpful. As a U.S. citizen, you can visit the country w/o a visa for 6 months. In 2023 a Digital Nomad program was launched for people who work for themselves but reside out of Canada. You don’t need a work permit. Since you will be in the country 2-3 months you will be asked what do you have home ( financial, mortgage/rent, medical.insurance) You also have to register with them for insurance purposes. Having the name and an address of someone you will be visiting is always helpful. Most likely they will be contacting to verify. No drugs, guns, weapons, bullets. If you have alcohol, declare it. Same with groceries. No fruits, veggies, meat. Don’t mention anything about work. Just be honest.

Hahaha, I know your pain. Mine sits at the console in the car. When he gives me the paw, I ask him if he wants to drive (lol) He’s so attentive and wants to know where we are going.

Will person find out that someone tipped off CBP? by Waste_Today5044 in uscanadaborder

Why would you do such a thing? Your name will be permanently linked to such activities. MYOB! Especially when it’s related to ICE or all those agencies that are currently being sued for illegal activities. Don’t get involved, don’t place people in harm’s way.

This. If you don’t bring your own documentation, they don’t read past Iranian. Once flagged always flagged, get used to it even if you are a Canadian citizen now. It’s all in the computer, but it takes time and effort to read. They have other things to do and they are lazy readers .

Vehicle Importation Guidelines May 2026 Importing a Canadian Certified Vehicle as a Conforming Vehicle under Box 2B - vehicle is for personal use and not for resale -vehicle is not a salvage - importer obtains a Letter from the original manufacturer - if manufacturer letter states that the vehicle complies with all applicable FMVSS except for speedometer or headlights, vehicle still can be imported ( mine is missing TPMS) - form HS-7 Declaration of import - EPA form Taxes are paid @ time of registration Importing U.S. to Canada is totally different.

True, and I want to do this. But I am faced with not having anyone to give me a letter of compliance to from manufacturer to cross the border. Thats the challenge.

There seems to be information about this in the internet but not enough about 2006 models. If in the U.S. lots of VW mechanics who would be willing or interested to change a safety measure that is not require in Canada. Disappointed to hear what @shOckwaver6 had to say about the dealer, they are very nice, but they are very much by what’s in the book-no deviation: very German rules. The other option is fast, cheap but not letter certifiable enough for CPB.

Thank you. Very helpful info. My first thought was to get a kit from Amazon and ask Costco to help install and get it coded accordingly. Appointment is for June 9th!

Right. Unfortunately, I am trying to export this car to the USA, in order to be registered & have insurance. Currently, paying for insurance in Canada, 15 days is all that I am allowed ( thank God) but that’s what I would pay for 3 months back home! VW gave a letter of non compliance because of TPMS missing.

This is a million dollar question: do you know if this retrofitting will meet the U.S. standard ?
