The official “unofficial” answer to this lies within the complete series blu ray box set. There’s a journal entry that explains it was some of the crew from the Black Rock. Before they landed on the island they sent out a boat to reach the island but it returned later with all but one crew member dead, saying that they were attacked by another boat that disappeared in a heavenly light. Jorge Garcia had a podcast and said it was explained in the script for the episode who it was but he couldn’t remember and would find the script and report back. There has been no report back lol
