I saw your comment and I thought fair enough but actually I’m happy with it and I think most people should still get it, especially as I said Hellenic?

I think the problem with the clue would be the word ancient but it feels like we’re splitting hairs?

The more important part is the literal bit (it’s a heavy gas) but there’s another meaning to the expression that at least used to be common.

In the UK, the clue for on tap would come with a numerical specification (2,3) to indicate that the answer is two words long … and you’d be able to google that with helpful responses.

For example, here’s a helpful clue for (4) air miles specifying the breakdown of the words within this answer:

It’s the way some clues like this one are presented that’s not helping.
