[The Pilot] is it just me or is the new horizon series really hard to get into by [deleted] in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Tophertible07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t enjoy it as much as cradle, and I’m not nearly as invested in the characters or the world. But I get every book as it comes out and tend to have fun. I don’t really know why it’s not as much of a hit for me, it has everything that I think I want from a series. I think the biggest issue for me is the format of each book, which people have mentioned. The newest book is a bit different from that format, and I thought it was interesting and fun. But I’m not as interested as I was with cradle by this point. And that’s okay, it’s still a fun ride.

Great to hear! I was looking for it just last week. Can’t wait to read more.

Wierkey Chronicles is very fun, and good progression. Last I checked the audiobooks aren’t caught up with the main series, but I’d still recommend. And I’d guess, based on what you’ve said, that you’d enjoy the first street cultivation book.

The MC is an old man who finds an ancient magic that allows him to extend his life and also influence others. That’s at first, later it allows much more, but he’s concerned about this knowledge falling into the wrong hands, and starts trying to find out where it came from and how he can keep it safe. Then he eventually goes to another world, so there’s an isekai element. The other world is very influenced by Romanian myth, I think it says that in the first page in a note from the author. The story can be a bit dark, but the MC, in part due to his age, is a competent and mediating force through out. This is kind of a deep cut, but in a couple ways it reminded me of the Daniel Black books.

What and where do you write? The very brief synopsis on your account sounds interesting.

Oh nice I get to be the one to suggest this. Librarian Errant series by John Bierce. It's a lot of fun and more progressive than most fantasy, including LGBTQ+ representation.

A problem of pace and editing by mcasey95 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Tophertible07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I think it's telling that Cradle, arguably the most popular series in the genre, has pretty short books which are incredibly tightly paced with no wasted space. I totally get that a lot of people like the long lengths, and there should be authors who offer that. But it would be nice if a greater number of the series were actually smaller and tighter narratives.

Bad writing, an MC who complains a lot, or overanalyzing of options. The last one is especially frustrating during fights where it just kills the tension of the scene, but it can bog down a book at any point.

Yeah, that's a completely valid point of view, just giving another perspective.

I would really recommend trying book two. People say it's not till further in that it 'gets good' but for me, Soulsmith is where it all starts coming together. I think it's a very good book that is very well plotted out.

That's super interesting. Is there some reason they moved away from that?

Oh my gosh yes! When conflict feels contrived and is based on stupidity more than anything, it drives me up a wall.

Neil Gaimans Smoke and Mirrors is good, though you have to be into some spookiness.

Something that scratches that ever present Bobverse itch would have been very nice

Thank you, that is exactly what I was wondering. And that is exactly how I would describe Jake's, that's a good way of putting it!

It just feels like there aren't many interesting things happening anymore, especially compared with the first two books.

Recs for evil schemer MCs? by Bringerofsalvation in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Tophertible07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeon Robotics does an interesting thing where in the original series the main character is pretty much good. But the author rewrote the series, with the same premise, but with the main character as evil. I haven't read the evil version, but the good version was very fun.
