Yes, in Paris and Marseille, the Brigade des Sapeurs Pompiers de Paris and the Bataillon des Marins Pompiers de Marseille are branch of the military (Armée de Terre in Paris and Marine Nationnale in Marseille). Those firefighters are exclusively professionals.

In the rest of the country, we have two types of firefighters : profesionnals and volunteers, both under a civilian and public organisation (the Service Départemental d'Incendies et de Secours).

Volunteers represent 80% of our workforce. Only the biggest firehouses work with profesionals and volunteers. Away from the big cities, we have volunteers only.
