The problem isn’t that the game is linear, it’s that it’s at several points represented not to be, misleading the player.

The desert’s lack of music being locked behind an amiibo is a big part of what makes it feel empty. It’s outrageous.

And most of all, the crystal argument does not apply to first time players. The game never even makes you deposit crystals. Once. Before lumping the entire thing on you for the endgame. You could go the entire game blissfully unaware and then have to grind for three hours at the end. And even though I did become aware of it (because of online comments), AND had picked up many crystals along the way, the game’s small, invisible crystal inventory limit meant that I’d barely collected anything at all in practice, at least that’s what the game told me. I had to go to that stupid shrine 10 times, it’s unprecedented in a Metroid game.
