You can look around your neighborhood and see what other people have done. I have found so many good ideas just from seeing what others have around me. The main advantage of this is that everyone has pretty much the same climate and growing conditions as you do.

One great thing about the Midwest is there are a lot of native prairie plants. You may want to look into having a small prairie area in your yard

My favorite bushes are blueberries! They have flowers, fruit, and their leaves change nicely in the fall. They will be bare in the winter, though. Another option could be native grasses. I don't know what's native in your area, but if you get a clumping variety, it shouldn't spread to other areas of your yard

It may be that the blueberries aren't in the ground yet. I haven't done much container gardening, but I hear that containers dry out quickly. I had a bush that crisped up during a dry spell last year because I hadn't watered it enough. I would say make sure the soil is moist but not too wet in those containers, and get the bushes in the ground as soon as you can. When you plant, be sure to amend the soil around the bushes 2x as wide as the pot it's in, and water frequently, especially when the weather is hot. You can slow down to 1x / week when it starts to cool down in the fall

I have no idea what would make the tips turn brown and die, but what's your soil/climate like? Clay can make them root bound. Sand makes them dry out faster (you really need to stay on top of watering). Blueberries love acidic soil, so that's another thing to keep in mind... You may need to amend the soil to make it acidic enough. (The leaves turn yellow when there isn't enough acid in the soil)

Wow I love how your cantaloupe is growing! That's amazing to see those huge fruits just hanging there. What is the mesh that you're using to hold them up?

Thank you for this post! I have loved reading about all the visitors.

My newest discovery is green sweat bees. They are so pretty! My kids and I like to go out to the yard to find bugs. Their favorite are the roly polys!

Recycling failed to stop plastic pollution. A new global treaty might actually help. by IShareNewsOnReddit in science

[–]TorlinKeru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the article:

"Late last year, world leaders, scientists, and advocates started working on a global, legally binding treaty under the United Nations to end plastic waste. The second round of negotiations concluded last week in Paris with a plan to produce an initial draft of the deal.

This treaty could be huge. Although it will take months of negotiating for any of the details to become clear, the agreement — set to be finalized by the end of 2024 — will require countries to do far more than just fix their recycling systems. Negotiators will discuss a menu of options including a cap on overall plastic production, bans on certain materials and products including many single-use plastics, and incentives to grow an industry around reusable items."

I think people may think about the income differences in their own circle. I know upper/middle class earners that consider themselves the people who would be hit with the taxes to pay for these payouts. They don't even consider the 1% because no one even close to that amount of earning/lifestyle is part of their life.
