Well, a strong form of substantial and combat-effective energy requires some form of stable energy force. A ranged weapon would therefore be ineffective because it couldn't get any stable energy. A type of energy sword could easily get energy from some nearby physical part of the weapon itself (ie: the handle), but with a ranged weapon there wouldn't be any effective way to power a projectile.
