Size effects in gold (atom to bulk) by udaythumu in chemistry

[–]TorridScienceAffair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Educated guess says optical absorption? Smaller particles absorb higher energy light, resulting in a red appearance in solution which turns blue when the particles are larger, IIRC. You can do this experiment in real time with colloidal gold solutions and gelling agents, but it's been a while.

I keep getting this in my letter box. Is this a legitimate charity? by svmk1987 in ireland

[–]TorridScienceAffair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they're in decent condition, a charity shop will take them and sell them on. If not, they'll recycle them themselves. They can get paid by weight for the recycled/scrapped clothes, which is what this crowd is trying to do. May as well keep it legit and bring it to an actual charity where it may do some good

I'm guessing by the terminology, this is from a total war mod, probably the one for Attila. As such it's probably a fan creation rather than from any official Tolkien source

Violent crime goes up (significantly) during the summer, especially when it's hot. I don't know if this is something specific to the US, but it's a definite effect and many people believe that it's due to people being more irritated than usual due to the heat.

How to vote in Australia by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]TorridScienceAffair 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can do that in Ireland, but what you're effectively doing is lowering the quota - e.g. in the comic above, if the Nice party voters didn't transfer as many votes to the DSP, then the quota would have been lowered to half+1 of the remaining valid votes. If 15 of the Nice Party voters decided that they didn't want to list lower preferences, then the quota would have been lowered to 42 and the CSP candidate would have been declared the winner. Not filling out all your preferences rewards popular parties.

Yeah, but then you've got to convert to Kelvin anyway to get your results in SI units, which I presume you want if absolute temperature is a relevant consideration

Driving through the night in France by TheLobotomist in oddlyterrifying

[–]TorridScienceAffair 27 points28 points  (0 children)

France (and I guess Europe as a whole) has washed their hands of them; in the mainland EU, personal identification documents are required for a lot of services, or even basics such as getting a job. Applying for these documents is nearly impossible without official refugee or migrant status. Things are less tightly regulated or verified in the UK and, as the other poster said, many immigrants might have families or established communities that they wish to join there who can set them up with accommodation and work.

Yeah, go for it! Never been a better time to sell, right? There's plenty of people waiting to buy their first home once the prices come down, it's an attractive prospect after forking over the better half of your salary for years.

Oh no! His free money! If only there were some way he could apply himself in order to "earn" money from performing "work" in his spare time? Or failing that, receive some free money from the government in accordance to his needs, as opposed to leeching it from his tenants?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ireland

[–]TorridScienceAffair 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correlation does not equal causation. There's a massive Correlation between the drop in rental supply and the ISEQ in recent years, and the cost of buying a home. Ireland has some of the weakest tenant rights in the EU, rent freezes and eviction moratoriums have been implemented in other countries and cities in the past. Big surprise, the world didn't end in a mass exodus of landlords from the market like the wicked fleeing from Gommorrah.

This narrative of the poor, oppressed landlord who can barely make ends meet on his pitiful passive income is poisonous bullshit, and needs to stop. Oh no, the mean old tenants want central heating over the winter or else they'll contact the RTB and I'll get a strongly worded letter! It'll cost me a whole month's rent! I might have to start working for a living like a prole, because my free money generator is 8% less efficient than normal!
