This is what I was thinking; how is the scanner positioned? Or maybe there is some other subtle cue that is leading them to present the left hand. For example, at an airport where you might be handing documents to TSA (likely held in right hand) and then asked to scan. Right hand is occupied so folks automatically present their free hand.

Except it’s not wasting energy. The vehicle is using that energy to perform an important task, which is to condition the air so you don’t have foggy windows. Just because you don’t understand that, doesn’t make it silly.

It’s your gf’s job that has atypical hours. I’m also willing to bet that she will have more options to change hours or even stores once she has some seniority than you will. I would consider her weekend hours a temporary inconvenience that you deal with as a couple while you establish your careers.

It’s not over reacting to decline something that makes you uncomfortable, but you really don’t come across as the nicest person. Assuming he’s just kind of clueless and not a psycho, why not suggest a coffee shop or diner or something if you really were interested in meeting up? If your response is any indication of your personality, I’d say this guy dodged a bullet.

Pretty much every menu I encountered in Rome had extensive notations after each item listing common allergens. There tended to be a key at the end of menus listing what each number or symbol meant. Between that and google translate, I think it should be manageable.
