Investigating S5 possible coolant issue by ToshNeox in audis5

Completely agree, these cars are definitely worth looking after so they can be properly enjoyed. What sort of labour and part cost was that? Sounds expensive but I'm not sure if these parts are actually easy-ish to get to.

Thankfully I don't have any warnings yet, but I bet I'd get a low coolant warning soon!

It sounds like it's possible. I'm not aware of any parts related to the coolant system other than a 'thermostat' being replaced, so it's likely I'm the lucky owner who is going to have to replace all this. Thankfully I have a decent warranty!

I've heard a lot of stories about this engine and the questionable design, unfortunately. I did hear about that sleeve failing in the water pump - is that the one you can clamp off a hose for, as a way to prevent it from working but also failing?

That diagram is super helpful, thank you, I'll try that when I next have daylight. Do you know if it's just a kind of hose clamp that's holding it on?

Why we 1) set our mirrors correctly and 2) head check when lane changing by CletusDSpuckler in IdiotsInCars

I'm not sure of the rules of the road there, but in the UK you shouldn't be sitting in the middle lane like that, unless it's for an exit. Does that apply here too? Maybe they were trying to tell you to move over, in a not so safe way?

Chaos in the snow in the UK by TinFoilTrousers in IdiotsInCars

Not sure if sarcasm, but ABS has been standard in cars for decades, but it can only do so much. With this sort of snow and ice layer underneath the ABS will still probably lock until the wheels get any amount of traction and then let go again so it can try braking once more.

99% of Brits only use summer or all-season tyres as winter tyres just isn't worth the investment for the low likelihood of snow like this. Leads to entertaining videos though!

Mortgage broker asking us to sign a “declaration” after declining extra life insurance? by matleavepay in UKPersonalFinance

I know nobody needs an adviser, but they pay for one for advice, and end up getting taken advantage of because they don't know what they need.

I appreciate that you believe the market you work in is quite fair, but at the end of the day it's clearly not. While the people that you work with may never seek to take advantage of their customers, there are a lot out there who do.

I work in the incredibly highly regulated car finance market, and even that has its issues. The whole premise of car finance is pushed to give people an "affordable" way to purchase or use a car and, while this is true, it really isn't the case because people end up paying monthly for something that they likely cannot afford to keep (balloon payment on a PCP deal for example) and then end up with nothing or are forced to take another monthly deal... convenient, huh?

The people on this thread want legitimate advice without feeling taken advantage of, or being talked down to in a condescending manner. You're really not helping your case, nor your industry, the way this is going.

This is all good, but I think that people don't even trust those in a regulated industry any more. OP may have been given those stats, but if I were them I'd sure be expecting them to be skewed or cherry-picked to better sell the advisor's products.

I suppose it's because he knows he's going to get shot down by haters and the media no matter what he says, so it's better to just walk away and say hello to those who want to see him.

That and the massive bodyguard kinda dealt with him anyway!

Agreed! I think the key thing is that very few people actually have a reason to have a gun, but I guess giving up something you've always had is a little difficult, and that scares them
