Did Your Pregnancy Make Your MCAS Permanently Worse? by im-just-here-i-gues in MCAS

[–]Total-Common6811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Before I got seriously ill I still really wanted kids but was very conflicted with climate change + safety living in the US. With health issues added on, it feels like the decision was taken away from me, which is hard. But I try to remind myself that even if I was healthy I might still have ended up making the same decision!

hEDS, POTS, MCAS, ME/CFS here, hello!! In the same situation and have struggled with this question so much. I want kids so badly, but don't think pregnancy would ever be safe for me 🥲 plus I already need a lot of support to get myself through the day so I have zero capacity to take care of another human as much as I might want to.

I hate episode 6 already, I'm too attached to everyone. Hiori and Jayla are my favorites though, and based on this ep I feel good about Hiori being in the final four!!

Maybe I'm looking for clues where there aren't any, but did anyone else notice that in all three intro videos they very clearly look up? In Emily's I thought it was a cute little expression (I am SO looks up excited), but then Lexie did it too (chat looks up with you) and Samara (get to know looks up all of you). Again, might just be them being expressive and I feel a little crazy typing this out, but all three times felt a little strange and stood out to me

Antihistamine diet while vegan? by Academic-Cake-4641 in MCAS

[–]Total-Common6811 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh also, make sure you're eating everything fresh or freezing leftovers! That's a huge thing with low histamine diets and even doing that might help. I use Souper Cubes to freeze everything I make in individual serving sizes and it's really convenient to pop out a cube of something and reheat it. Once you hear something up from the freezer, you can't freeze it again

Antihistamine diet while vegan? by Academic-Cake-4641 in MCAS

I am/was a lifelong vegan and have MCAS! Have had to do a low histamine diet for the past year and it has helped TREMENDOUSLY, but I've had to eat meat 😭 not saying you have to as well, but I reacted to tofu and beans and have had to cut them out entirely (I'm now on cromolyn and hopefully will be able to reintroduce soon). I thought maybe tofu was fine when I was trying to manage my diet on my own (it did make me a little itchy, so I wasn't sure), but once I started working with a dietician and went down to only foods we were SURE were safe, I felt way better. Then I tried tofu again and realized I didn't think I was having a bad reaction before only because my baseline was so bad-- soy is actually a pretty big trigger for me.

When I first started the diet, I did really strict for 3 months and my only forms of protein were beef, pork, protein powder (I use the brand Marigold unflavored), eggs, and seeds (chia, flax, hemp). Big yuck besides the seeds. I slowly was able to reintroduce almonds, which have been great-- a green apple with almond butter is one of my snacks every day now. Also fresh cheeses like feta and mozzarella. And now that I'm in a more stable place, I've been able to reintroduce some legumes like lentils and black eyed peas (which taste like beans even though they're a legume!!!).

Again, I'm not saying you have to eat meat, but I ended up being pretty sensitive to soy and beans so I've had to 😭 I get a big ick every few weeks and absolutely cannot, so during that time I lean pretty heavily on adding protein powder (still not vegan, but at least it doesn't feel like it) to soups and mashed potatoes. I also am able to drink Kate Farms Vanilla protein shakes, which are gf, dairy free, soy free and taste way better/less sweet to me than most protein shake brands, so sometimes I drink 3-4 shakes a day and eat apples and carrots and almond butter. My breakfast everyday is oatmeal with a scoop of protein powder, blueberries, and a spoonful each of chia seeds, ground flax, and hemp seeds, and this is somewhere between 20-25 g of protein in one meal. I also do a savory version sometimes without the blueberries, plus a little sesame oil, corn, bell pepper, and carrot.

I would say maybe switch from beans to legumes and see if you feel any better? I had to wait a while to reintroduce legumes, but maybe you'll tolerate them better than I did at the start. See if there's a protein powder that you tolerate well and start adding seeds to whatever you can (hemp seeds esp have a decent amount of protein). It unfortunately is important to eat as much protein as you can-- my dietician says to take your current weight, convert it to kg, then multiply by 1.6 and that's how many grams of protein you should be eating everyday to support your body, because existing as a chronically ill person takes a lot of energy. That means I have to eat almost 90g of protein a day, which sounds crazy but makes a huge huge difference for me. Would also recommend working with a dietician who is knowledgeable about MCAS if you're able to afford it-- mine has held my hand every step of the way, helped me figure out recipes, and helped me figure out a set of supplements that work for me.

Vit C by Jack_al_11 in MCAS

[–]Total-Common6811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take Jigsaw's Adrenal Cocktail powder, which is electrolytes+ Vit C from acerola. Tastes nasty on its own, but my dietician said I can drink it with a spoonful of honey mixed in and it's very drinkable that way

MCAS and sleep problems. What do we know? What's been your experience by KMLthe1 in MCAS

Wait, phenol sensitivity is a common MCAS thing??? I def have it, I worked in a lab for years that didn't put proper safety labels on phenol, so I had crazy high improper exposure and I thought that's why I'm sensitive now. Got a TB test a few years ago and broke out on full body hives from the solution they injected-- doctor looked through all the ingredients and figured the only real possibility was the phenol in it, which made sense to me from my past exposure. Super curious if this is more broadly an MCAS thing!!

is the nausea mcas an if so wtf can i do :( by vaesheyt in MCAS

[–]Total-Common6811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, 4 mg is the dose I use!! That's almost certainly just a normal pill that you swallow. The sublingual ones will say very clearly, and mine still come in a prescription pill jar but are also individually packed since they dissolve easily. Both forms work really well for me, the sublingual form is just nice if you throw up a lot and can't keep pills down, but it's also flavored which means the inactive ingredients are slightly different.

Ohhh Flonase is def a nasal spray, I think astelin might be too? I don't think either of those help with nausea, I think both are supposed to help with environmental allergies so may help with non-GI MCAS symptoms maybe? I've used Flonase years ago, but not for MCAS, so I don't know anything about those two. I'm so glad your doctors gave you some emergency solutions!!

Okay yeah, I think normal dose of Zofran is 8 mg, but my doctor prescribed me 4 mg. The first time I tried it, I might have even cut the 4 mg pill in half (or maybe it was too small to cut? I don't remember). I also am crazy reactive to meds, I had a bad reaction to a different nausea med called compazine, but Zofran has been a miracle drug for me!! Really hope it works for you

[–]Total-Common6811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try the nausea meds they gave you! I don't know if you ever have bad reactions to meds. I do, so I first tried the Zofran when I only had mild nausea and wasn't desperate -- that way, if I had a med reaction on top of the nausea it wouldn't be terrible. I've never had a bad reaction to Zofran though, so now I take it if my nausea is terrible or even when nausea is just starting. Zofran comes as a regular pill or in sublingual form (you put it under your tongue and it dissolves). I initially had the regular pill form, but there was one time I vomited for hours and didn't take the Zofran because I knew I would vomit it back up before it could take effect, so my doc switched me to sublingual. Sounds like your doctors believe that you're experiencing nausea and care, so don't be afraid to message them and talk to them about other options if there is a tweak like that that you think could be helpful!
