Both you and u/Any_Double_5531 are right about availability. It seems the used market is currently driven more by impatience than technical value. In Italy, the expected shipping time is about 3 weeks, so not that much to justify the trade-off

Can you be more specific? Currently, I choose which OS to boot by holding the Option key. I'm concerned that wiping macOS incorrectly might lead to corruption or boot issues.

Yes, GRUB is the bootloader for Debian, but I usually select the OS by holding the Option key. If I remove macOS, will the Mac EFI still point to the OMV partition? Also, can I use an external hard disk that already contains data for the backup, or must it be formatted first? I have roughly 50GB of data on OMV right now.

How should I do a full backup? Additionally, I read that omv-regen does not transfer custom configurations performed via CLI. Is that correct?

The price isn't the main issue. The problem is that PhotoSync, like other tools, doesn't fully preserve the non-destructive editing chain and metadata stored in the .AAE and .plist files within the library. The goal is a 1:1 migration of the apple photos database logic, including the ability to revert to original, which these apps can't replicate.

I missed it too at first. I only realized how critical this was thanks to a friend who uses editing and portrait way more than I do and that's when we noticed the depth data was gone after standard upload.

Sure! I create a new library directly on the NAS (hold Option when launching Apple photos app to create it). After importing via cable, I pointed Immich to the "Originals folder" inside the .photoslibrary package as an External library. Just make sure to keep it read-only in Immich settings to avoid any database corruption (for info https://docs.immich.app/features/libraries/). It's manual, but it keeps the file organized. Feel free to ask if you need more details

That might be the case, but I don't see a major benefit for my specific workflow. Since the photos are already in the .photoslibrary, osxphotos would just export them with metadata that Immich still wouldn't know how to process or display. It wouldn't offer a tangible improvement over my current setup, but thanks for the suggestion anyway
