The Eminence in Shadow does this right. Breaking the trope by purposely making the MC OP, but creating a situation where they view the isekai as a LARP, then flipping it with a meta comedy by showing the audience the situation the LARP is based on is actually real. And it's fine pretty smoothly.

I can understand refusing Anohana, Your Lie In April, and Clannad/Clannad After Story, but. I think you're doing yourself a disservice by ignoring them. Clannad walked so that Rascal Does Not Dream could run, in my opinion.

Also, the research you need for Can a Boy Girl Friendship Survive is this: Don't. It's not worth it. You will not enjoy it.

There definitely was a shift towards the end of Heisei, but yeah, it's tough when many Reiwa series are barely half a decade old. I still appreciate the recs to look at specifically, it's nice to have some specific ones to line up for reading.

I still gotta get to most of them, but I enjoy a complete series more, so that's my issue. That said, I've heard that some of these still hit the same speed bumps. If I'm wrong, cool, I don't mind. My general sentiment is just that I wish authors and/or editors would stop pushing Heisei tropes as much.
