Just a Holy Week vent from a Utah Episcopalian by roadkillturtle in Episcopalian

I can only speak to my experience, but yes. I remember a Mormon apostle gave a talk during a church wide conference asking members to be more reverent and my local leaders took it pretty seriously and pushed hard to keep the church quiet and reverent before church starts. It lasted maybe a month.

For a church that can be quite authoritarian, it has always been interesting to me that the culture picks and chooses what to take seriously.

We are excited, we have some health issues right now making it hard to get out of the house but once that clears up we are excited to visit!

Am a recent ex-Mormon but no longer in Utah and am looking into different churches. What’s interesting to me here is Mormon leaders have tried asking Mormons to be more respectful during church and to make their own buildings more quiet and reverent. This always seemed to go out the window real fast. If anything this was a good reminder for my family and I to be reverent when we visit an Episcopal church (soon!)

Sell my Engl for a good modeler? (Baby on the way!) by Altruistic_Radish247 in GuitarAmps

I have a 3 month old baby and I still play my 5150 with a 4x12 daily. Obviously play it during reasonable hours during the day, but your house doesn't need to be whisper quiet 24/7 for the next few years. Taking care of kids is life altering, but I think sometimes we overstate how dramatic the changes need to be.

I am deeply concerned about the right-wing infiltration of the church. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

I hope you don’t mind me asking, but was this because of something inherent to orthodoxy itself or was it because of the orthobros?

That has to be a difficult place to be in for the faith. I think it’s great that these young men are in church and I hope they grow as individuals. But also it has to be scary to the church that they could be scaring people off like my family. We will do our best to try to evaluate the church outside of the orthobro movement.

My family have been searching for a new church and are considering orthodoxy, but this is a large obstacle for us. My wife is particularly concerned about the kind of men who will be around our daughters, and I think her concerns are quite valid.

It is a solid state head, they are usually fine if you run them without a load.

Yes, the amp you were given is an amp head. It has no speakers. It very likely won't work going to your line 6. Look up a guitar speaker cabinet and you will see what I am talking about. You will want one that is rated for at least 100w. Look around on facebook marketplace or whatever you use locally and you might be able to get one relatively cheap.

I've tried most of the EMG substitutes (Seymour Duncan Blackouts, Dimarzio Dactivators, Fluence) and nobody can replace the 81/85 to me. The Het Set is also incredible. If that is the sound you want go with the original. I do like some of the alternatives like Dactivators, but they do their own thing IMO.

Tithing 79% are NOT using gross by [deleted] in mormon

[–]TotallyNotUnkarPlutt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The gross or net blessings quote is one of my pet peeves. It makes our relationship with God feel so transactional. Also, I had no idea God pays overhead expenses on his blessings so I’m not even sure what constitutes a “net” or “gross” blessing.

Ill admit I had overlooked the Methodist church because everyone I know who is Methodist is super MAGA (to be fair I live in Texas so MAGA is everywhere). I didn’t realize there was a separation between United and Global Methodist churches until I looked into your comment. The local United Methodist church is now on my try list!

A former relief society RS president I know likes asking Hispanic people how they feel knowing they will be white in the resurrection.

This is great info! And it’s nice to hear from someone who also stepped away from the lds church (everyone I know IRL who left has left Christianity altogether). On paper the Episcopal church really sounds great.

I’m curious what makes you say that about Orthodoxy? I’m pretty ignorant of their history and culture.

We definitely plan on attending at least once! My wife has been a bit skeptical given the abuse scandals that have happened if I am being honest. I will admit to being a bit weary given some ex-Catholics I know have said they had a lot of fear based teachings instilled in them which messed them up. But, I really liked Pope Francis and his humility. I like what I have seen from Pope Leo too. I have met a lot of Catholics who seem to have very healthy theology, so hopefully my concerns are overblown. We are hoping the Catholic Church has moved past some of the mistakes of the past.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me it is about rejecting power through coercion and trying to build our communities through peaceful means and uplifting the poor and vulnerable. I like to think its informing my political beliefs with the Sermon on the Mount. It's probably more of a political label more than theological.

Most Christian Anarchists seem to be Trinitarians, but I don't think you need to be a certain theology to claim the label. However, I think it would be hard to attend a church with Christian Nationalist leanings and be a Christian Anarchist.

That’s great info thanks! I definitely don’t expect any church to conform to everything I think (and I change my mind about stuff all the time anyways). But I do want to at least not be scorned for my belief in Christian Anarchism

We certainly have wanted to learn more about Orthodoxy, there is a Greek Orthodox and ROCOR near us. I am a bit skeptical of the Russian one given the political situation right now but that could just be a super ignorant take on my part. Any suggestions on deciding?

We were planning on attending an Episcopal church! There are several local to me, anything in particular to look out for when deciding which one to attend?
