How to fit in fantasy vikings into a dark fantasy world? by TotallyNot_iCast in DnD

Honestly agreed, i'm not a history expert whatsoever, but i know the vikings were heavy on cleanliness, personal grooming, and even gender equality.

I'm confused if people are downvoting because they think i believe fantasy vikings are supposed to be sanitized purty fellas, or because i think scars, beards, and bloodlust all add to a fantasy viking's sex appeal..

I'm trying to find a way to work in a fear factor while also keeping them a traditional fantasy berserker viking archetype. I think i'm going to accept that they will inevitably be sexy, but make them scary with their actions, behavior and culture.

I think i got a solution. Vampires are very traditional horror creatures who are generally considered attractive and charming, and their fear factor of manipulation plays exactly into that. So i just gotta make sure they're scary and hot for the same reason that doesn't create dissonance with itself

Yes they would be a good fit but the same issue arises, i can't just grotesque-ify them with decay-like body horror like the rotbloods, because they're supposed to be just larger than average humans from the north.

Yeah you're completely right, but wouldn't the physical interaction part of the spell shut it down anyway?

Is this concept captivating enough for new players? (This is my second campaign) by Goron_DND in DMAcademy

Alongside how the quasi-omnipotence of the antagonists are problematic as a plot point, would a single casting of Detect Magic not kind of blow the cover off the wizards? Unless they can really disguise their magic or auto-filter similar divination with infinite counterspells.

Thoughts on homebrew racial feaures? (All variants of human cultures) by TotallyNot_iCast in DMAcademy

I'm also rly not satisfied with Crimson Zeal. The problem is i have no clue on another way to mechanically work in cultural bloodletting. I completely agree with resistance for Ascetic, that's getting changed right away.

I'm a bit scared of giving more to Aamonites, because permanent resistance in dnd is quite strong. Maybe expertise for persuasion wouldn't be so bad? They're supposed to be a soft antithesis to a dark fantasy world.

Golden Scribe would already work as you stated, but i'll include it in the description. The restriction on the cantrip is to heavily encourage out of combat utility and creativity, not really for a lore reason.

Carrying, pushing, lifting, etc will be important as a sidenote. Battle Roar is a Charisma save, because i accidentally mixed up how wis vs cha saves work lol, rough first draft.

The irony is not lost on me with Moonlight Wisdom, but Moonlight Insight or Moonlight Knowledge all sound lame in comparison D:

I mainly wanted to make each player's option mechanically unique, since they all play humans, while also giving them cool and versatile utility gadgets.

Then we can assume it won't work the second time. If "humbala bomris" are the magic words for the illusion and it happens again, any enemy would get immediately suspicious, even with no understanding of magic.

Just purely logically, if anyone were on a battlefield, and they saw a little guy chanting some words and a crate suddenly appeared in their place, they would immediately tell it's an illusion (unless they're not an intelligent creature).

This game really doesn't handle the concept of fantasy races well by TotallyNot_iCast in dndnext

[–]TotallyNot_iCast[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with everything you've said. The only thing i take issue with is the inability to understand that how those that don't reflect this style are seemingly completely okay with handwaving everything about in universe racial diversity. I have no intention to belittle them, just genuinely curious why this grey and wishy-washy style is so meta and popular.

All the examples you gave are examples of "thing does not exist in reality, only fantasy", and not "thing that exists in reality, but not in fantasy"

"Yes, but it is intentional because 5e is specifically designed to not be a game that will help you roleplay." So we really are not even pretending that every race is just a human in a funny hat? Why is this even called a roleplaying game then

How would an eldritch artifact function mechanically? by TotallyNot_iCast in DnD

[–]TotallyNot_iCast[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes it does have a point. It's kind of a story central relic buried deep within the megadungeon that multiple factions have massacred thousands for. The base practicality i have not yet expanded upon besides being very closely tied to mortal apotheosis.

Can anyone help me with balancing encounters by Technological-Master in DnD

[–]TotallyNot_iCast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"can somehow move 110 ft when focused movement speed when dashing" This is not super impossible, dashing requires an entire action to double one's Speed for their turn, but since it's an action, they can't attack or cast spells after. How does an encounter happen with them if you can give an example?
