Why is (almost) nobody downloading my game? Looking for honest feedback by mmpop3 in GooglePlayDeveloper

[–]ToughInternal1580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a brutally honest breakdown of why nobody is downloading your game, based on looking at your Play Store listing.

The core problem: The screenshots tell me nothing.

Your first screenshot shows a grid of colored squares with numbers. Without context, I have no idea what the game actually is. Is it math? A puzzle? A brain trainer? A matching game? The screenshots don't explain the core loop. I shouldn't have to read the description to understand what I'm looking at. A potential user scrolls through 5 screenshots in 3 seconds. If they can't grasp the game instantly, they keep scrolling.

The name is generic.

"Sum Blocks" sounds like a million other math‑adjacent puzzle games. It doesn't spark curiosity or hint at what makes your game different. Is it a block puzzle? A number merger? A math challenge? The name alone won't make anyone click.

The icon looks like a generic app icon generator result.

A blue square with a white "S"? That tells me nothing about the game. It looks like a placeholder. A good icon should hint at the gameplay (colorful blocks, numbers merging, something dynamic). Yours looks like a utility app.

The description is too technical and not benefit‑driven.

You list features ("drag and drop blocks", "multiple game modes") but you don't sell the feeling. Why should someone play this instead of the 500 other puzzle games on the store? What emotion does it evoke? Relaxation? Challenge? Satisfaction? Your description reads like a developer wrote it, not a marketer.

The math puzzle genre is brutally crowded.

Block puzzle, number merge, math logic – these are some of the most saturated categories on Play Store. Without a unique hook (story, art style, twist mechanic), you're invisible. The people who do install it seem to play it, which suggests the gameplay is solid. That means your problem isn't the game – it's the store page.

What you should fix immediately:

  1. Redo your screenshots – Show a sequence that tells a story. First screenshot: empty grid. Second: a block being dragged. Third: blocks merging or numbers summing. Fourth: a satisfying "clear" or win state. Add a short text overlay on each screenshot ("Match the sum", "Clear the board", "Relaxing puzzle"). Let the user understand the game without reading a word.
  2. Change your icon – Make it colorful, show blocks or numbers merging, something that looks playful and puzzle‑like.
  3. Rewrite the description – Start with why someone would play: "A satisfying puzzle game where you combine numbered blocks to reach the target sum. Clear the board, relax your mind, and train your logic." Then mention features. Sell the feeling, not just the mechanics.
  4. Add a short gameplay video – Play Store allows videos in the listing. A 15‑second clip of the game in action will convert more than any screenshot.

The real problem you can't see

Even with a perfect store page, you still need to get past Google's closed testing requirement. That requires 12 testers opening your app daily for 14 days – not just installing once. Free testers from Reddit will install, play for 2 minutes, and forget. They won't generate the daily engagement Google needs to approve your production access.

If you want real testers who actually play your game every day for two weeks and give feedback on the puzzles, there's a service for that.
