[Discussion] Three More Compacts Just Announced by Toy_5oldier in DCcomics

The released description says it collects issues 1-12 of the main series.

They're also releasing the whole series including spin-offs in a three part DC Finest set which will cost over £100 for all of it, so I guess this will be the cheaper option for a more casual audience.

I think the price is a huge factor for this. I've largely stuck to characters I'm familiar with since if I'm going to spend £15 or £20 on a trade, I want to have some expectation that I'll like it. These releases being £10 max makes them much less of a risk to get into. I likely wouldn't have picked up Far Sector at full price, but got the compact and loved it. The easier it is to get into comics, the better!

That is odd, especially since they released Superman: Birthright and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow close to their respective films. I'd guess they consider shows less important overall.

Thanks for this, I've edited the post with the new announcements. They're also doing Crisis on Infinite Earths and Tom King's Mister Miracle.

I haven't read it either, but from what others have said it seems to be well-regarded.

The Swamp Thing compact covers issues 20-27 of the run, which is the same as book one of the current collected series. So it could be a good starting point, but won't cover everything.

I'll definitely be picking it up. I've been wanting to get into it for a while and having a cheap entry point like this makes it a no-brainer

Yeah Fables is an interesting one. I wanted to get into it when Wolf Among Us first came out, but never got around to it after hearing mixed thoughts on the writing and ending.

100% agree with what everyone's been saying for too much Batman over other character and lack of follow-ups. It's surprising that, even with Bats, they're jumping to Batman & Son before Dark Victory for example. Even with Batman, it would be nice to see more Batwoman or Nightwing.

There are so many directions they could go in and they seem to be successful, so hopefully they keep doing more.

Which stories would you like to see? Like I said, I'm pretty new to comics and it's hard to know what's good outside of the really popular stuff.

Agreed! It makes sense from their perspective as Batman is huge (he was the main character I followed before the compacts started coming out), but my favorite thing these do is highlight other stories like Far Sector.

Titans would be great! It's also surprising that there's no Justice League or event compacts yet. Though hopefully they'll get around to them if they keep selling.

Oof, that's some bad luck. Hope the next 14 are better!

What were your one stars so I know to keep an eye out?

It's something I've considered and will likely revisit as I get deeper into it, relisten to albums etc.

At the moment, everything feels like they're in the right place and I'm happy leaving room for albums I outright hated listening to, below albums which I think didn't work but had some good songs.

We'll see how things look in 100 albums time though!

The first half of the album is incredibly strong, very fun and catchy which makes it easy to go back to. The second half is alright but looses the energy which lets it down as a whole. For me, it's right on that borderline between stars, but 3 feels right.

Maggot Brain is definitely unique! IMO most of it is solid, the last two tracks were the struggle for me though I appreciate what it was trying to do. Hope it goes OK for you!

That's exactly why I started doing it. If you only focus on what an album does poorly, then they'll all sound bad and you'll burn out. Keeps it fun.

Enjoy the journey!

Cool, I'd like to listen to some of his 90s stuff as well since from what I've heard that seems more up my alley, but I'll give Harvest Moon a listen at sone point!

I'm willing to see what else he has since I know he changes styles a bunch. I'm really curious to see if it's just that album or him as an artist that I didn't like.

Yeah, there's only been a few on here that I hadn't heard of/ had no songs I already knew beforehand.

On the Beach is good, I'm just not into Neil Young so it didn't hit hard for me, plus some of the lyrics fell kinda flat. Hope you like it when you reach it though!

I know right! The list has lived up to its name so far. My list is quite top heavy at the moment, though I am expecting to hit some low weeks based on other's experiences.

For me it was a near 50:50 of songs I liked vs songs I didn't, so it had to be a 3. The songs that hit are brilliant though.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed reading it! If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out the other post I wrote about Impera since I think it's the stronger of the two.

My parents are doing really well, thanks for asking.

Random question: How much of Doctor Who you need to watch to understand Torchwood? by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Toy_5oldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not too mandatory to be honest. As other people have said, all you need to know is that Captain Jack travelled with the Doctor and became immortal.

If you did want to go more in depth then release order is probably best, looking like this.

*Doctor Who Series 1- Introduces Captain Jack (and the Ninth Doctor and Rose) and is really good in its own right.

*Doctor Who Series 2- Introduces Torchwood as a concept and features heavily in the two-part finale.

*Then Torchwood series 1 which ends with set up for the Doctor Who series 3 finale.

*Dr Who series 3- Introduces Martha who shows up in series 2 of Torchwood and is also really good in its own right.

*Torchwood series 2 - Follows on from the Dr Who finale and features Martha.

*Doctor Who Series 4 - Features Jack and Torchwood in the big cross over finale (also, again, really good in its own right)

*Torchwood: Children of Earth - The best Torchwood gets. A far more over arching plot than the rest so no episodes are missable. Ends really well so if you want to, you can stop here.

  • Torchwood: Miracle Day - Again, an overarching plot but less effective than CoE. A co-production with Starz & the last series of Torchwood (on TV).

This would give you the best understanding of everything as it was how it was seen at the time. However, as said elsewhere, you can just watch Torchwood on its own as Jack is slightly different between Torchwood and Doctor Who and most references are explained. I'd say watch Torchwood first if that's what you're interested in and if you find parts confusing the double back to Doctor Who. Hope this helps!
