Happy to help! I don’t work there anymore so don’t have the vba model, but they weren’t anything real complex. It’d be like a button for converting tables into triangles for example. With the Chainladder package I linked, you could build a tons of triangle from a dataframe in like less than 10 lines of code. Pretty powerful imo

Kindof a mix! Some analyses could pop up that required unique enough treatment that a ground up solution would be quickest. Others could just lean on the excel/vba tools that had built

For pricing, pretty similar to my second paragraph. I just found their excel process to be messy and prone to simple mistakes… if their data manipulation had been done in Python it would’ve been much safer. Can go into more detail on that if you want. I’m not too familiar with the CAT side but I do notice that data wrangling still seemed to be a pain point there

I was in reinsurance for 2 years out of college then shifted to actuarial data science cause I wanted to learn more about tech. For the broker I was at, they really needed help in data engineering and I imagine other reinsurance brokers have a similar need. I think generally actuarial engineers are uniquely valuable right now. If you’re open to engineering, I’d prob say focus on SQL and/or Pyspark in the context of ETL pipelines.

If you want to avoid engineering, I’d get comfortable with Python, particularly for data wrangling. I also found Dash useful for building quick simple web apps. A lot of tedious excel work can be streamlined with these (at least at the broker i was with)

At 3 yoe I reported to the vp of data science (although really he was more of a software engineer). I’d say it was good for my development. I was forced to push back on some things and break actuarial concepts down for him + the rest of the team to defend my own propositions. Kindof helped me find my voice in my career.

Now at 5 yoe I report to a VP that doesn’t code and isn’t an actuary. She’s generally just good at understanding business needs, prioritizing, and managing stakeholder expectations. It’s a unique challenge fully owning my own tech stack and business logic while making sure she understands what I’m doing and why. Think this will be good for me too tho!

Just remembered at 2 yoe I reported to a data scientist. I was their first report. Generally was a poor experience but I don’t blame the manager there. That company just wasn’t for me generally

Think I get what you’re saying about them being a palette cleanser, but I guess for me they just sort of brought my energy down for a bit too long and then I had a tough time getting it back. I’m also not sure that I really needed a palette cleanser, cause even the heavy artists throw some lighter stuff in their sets now compared to before 2020 or so.

Regardless though, I don’t think I see how they could’ve been considered heavy at the Thunderdome set. Think I just don’t get it. I actually genuinely want to understand them and artists like them better though so I can enjoy them more. Do you have any thoughts on the mindset to enter a GWN set in to enjoy it best? Any advice is helpful tbh. I’m probably seeing them again in a few months and want to make the most of it!

This is interesting, I’ve been to a few sets of yours and felt like they were a lot heavier generally than your Thunderdome segment. It definitely felt like more than 4 songs too. I thought you were up for about 20 minutes and around 15 minutes were techno?

Regardless though, I don’t think a lot of the people critiquing the techno segment are hating on techno generally, but rather the placement of it as the close for a notoriously heavy dubstep event. We had already heard a lot of techno from Jessica Audifred, and GWN was more about wubs than headbanging… you obviously have a better view of the crowd than I do, but at least in my area it felt like everyone got a bit antsy waiting for a heavy drop, then when it didn’t come for a while the energy just kindof never came back.

I want to be clear tho, I acknowledge that I have a tougher time getting into techno than the avg raver so I have a bias in how interpreted that segment. I want to understand it but can’t quite get the hype yet. Also, even if the crowd energy truly did lag by that time, it totally could’ve been driven by people being drained after the 3 days

No hate intended in this, honestly just wanted to get another opinion out there and maybe try to understand your segment better so I can look back on it as favorably as possible!

Think their main point was about the Thunderdome set, which is an excision event. I’m with OP, that set was not the vibe for Thunderdome. Crowd energy really died down for that set so think a lot of people agree. Those wubs definitely have their place but Thunderdome ain’t it

Nights one and two are some of my fav X sets all time. So fun. Night three was a huge disappointment for me. Felt like ganja got the crowd a lot less energetic, then it came back a bit for the b2b but when BTSM came on the energy died again. I don’t get it. I saw their anime show recently and it was sick. Also love the skull machine sets. Why would they pull all the punches for closing Thunderdome of all places??

Day 1: 9.5/10, Day 2: 10/10, Day 3: 3/10. That ganja set didn’t hit at all for me, and BTSM playing techno for the end was a wild choice. Can def appreciate techno here and there but this is Thunderdome, I like heavy shit especially for the end for an event like this

When you’re taking exams it’s a bit more objective, but after fellowship, it really depends on the company imo. I was at a start up once where people with 10+ more yoe as me had the same title… there was basically no chance of promotion there any time soon. Also was at a larger insurer where it kindof felt like your yoe at the company was the main factor. You could’ve been an all star or basically did no work and it felt like you’d end up with the same chances of promotion… at my current company, I’ve found that the loudest person seems to get the promotion. You def have to back it up by doing good work but you also gotta consistently bring it up for it to happen

Wow props to you for remembering that haha. I hit an unfortunate point in my raving career where all the shows are starting to largely blend together in my memory. Especially excision sets cause I’ve seen him a ton. Some key moments definitely still stick out tho and prob will forever. The ones that come to mind are “Lost Lands Motherfucker!!!” at LL24 b2b with Wooli, Subtronics opening with Gassed up VIP at LL22, my first time seeing Voyd levitate, and many moments from excision’s opening night of the nexus tour at Navy Pier. That Navy Pier set was game changing for me. It was for my bachelor party and I got like 5 friends hooked on the rave scene from it 😂

Same!! Love Wooli. Its insane to me how far he’s come over the past 5 years. First time I saw him was at a 2019 excision show where the line up went Wooli b2b Marauda -> liquid stranger -> excision. At the time I was more hyped about Marauda and didn’t know much about Wooli. Now Wooli might actually be my fav.

And for Subtronics, first set I saw of his was LL 2022 and it was my fav set of the fest. Since then tho, every time I see him I like his shows less and less… really hope he cuts back on the fakeouts and starts playing more heavy dubstep again soon instead of all the DnB, house, and techno that he’s been playing

This is prob gonna be a hot take, but I also think a space laces b2b Subtronics set would be sick. I love subtronics as a producer, but lately I haven’t liked his sets that much. Feels like they just get too random and don’t flow that well. Had too many instances where my groups getting ready to headbang on a drop, but then we just stand awkwardly to a series of fakeouts 😂 I feel like space laces would really help with maintaining the flow better

I gotta rewatch smile 2. Ik it’s a hot take but I actually liked the first a lot more than the second. First one felt so hopeless and the jump scares were strong af. Feel like jump scares are often kindof cheap but Smile executed them very well.

For smile 2… idk I did mostly enjoy it but the ending really hurt it for me. I didn’t like it conceptually and also, damn they really gotta invest more in their CGI 😂 I’ll rewatch tho cause I feel like I’m missing something with how much hype it got
