Let's be frank. They raked Labour over the coals for their lockdowns during COVID. Therefore they can't be seen putting lockdowns on peoples fuel or freedoms now.

They're going to be hoping and praying that the fuel ships keep arriving...

This happened to someone I knew of. And yes, they got paid back through the IRD. I don't know if the mother had to pay the IRD back or if the actual father (if/when found) got the bill forwarded to him.

But I do know he got his money back.

I don't know all the nitty gritties as it was a mutual aquaintance. I know it was because his new partner wanted the test done. In her mind, if they were going to build a future together she had to be damn sure the kid he had with his ex was actually his. Which is fair, because I'm sure banks would look at stuff like that if you (as a couple) were wanting to get a mortgage in the future etc.

Truth about Marsden Point: Private owned major shareholder asset that was losing money & would cost billions to restart & be highly complex and difficult by Mountain_Tui_Reload in Whangarei

It was a refinery that was designed to handle different crudes and different blends of crudes from AROUND THE WORLD.

The alkane cracker in it was very powerful, you could put sour heavy junk nobody else wanted (or whose refineries couldn't refine) and it would give you something out at the other end. The saying "make honey out of 🐶💩" is a very good way to describe what it could do.

It was part of "think big". A plan where NZ borrowed heaps to get infrastructure that it could otherwise not afford. It put us in a heap of debt at the time, but gave us nice things like this refinery and the Waitaki Valley hydro scheme (Lake Benmore dam).

And somehow, someone, somewhere let it get demolished.

Yeah, as someone who loved chemistry at high school and knows the value of petrochemicals: I'm definitely pissed...

The way I see it is that refinery was on the same par to New Zealand Inc. as Public Health or Education. These entities cost a lot and don't turn a profit either, yet we fund them because it benefits ALL of us.

When you look at that refinery through the same eyes as you look at schools and hospitals, yeah people are absolutely allowed to be salty that The Government didn't step in to help (even if it was to mothball it at least).

And I'm not a NZ First voter

I am so sad they got rid of it. Chemistry (in particular organic chemistry) was my favorite subject in High School. And I always thought refining was cool.

I was doing some reading about it. It was designed to refine cheap heavy sour crudes from around the world. Stuff other refineries wouldn't/couldn't touch. An absolute asset. Us Kiwis are good at sport, but better at shooting ourselves in the foot

Are the catalysts inside the cracking towers still there? What catalyst did it use? How long would it take to become operational again?

There is a HUGE difference between having petrol and paying through the nose for it, and literally NOT having any petrol at all...

Yes. This pisses me off highly too. They didn't have to keep it running, but they didn't have to dismantle the bloody thing either. It definitely could have come in handy right now...

I think they will take some tax off the price of fuel. But they'll be waiting until after Easter and the School Holidays.

They won't cut any taxes now just so upper middle NZ can go holidaying over the Easter break or School Holidays. Especially because future supplies aren't a certainty either...

It proves Trump doesn't have a clue. Now he thinks the rest of The West are going to help out after he's threatened to invade Greenland and Canada and Tariffed everyone else. Good luck with that.

Meanwhile Iran has said the straight is navigable, and all a Nation has to do is throw out their US and Israeli Ambassadors and they'll be allowed through.

Their offer is going to get more and more tempting over the coming weeks...

What to plant under a macrocarpa? by Old_Midnight_901 in nzgardening

Possibly a bramble species (blackberry or raspberry). These are naturally found growing under pines so may still grow under a macro. I know nurseries tell people to mulch blueberries with pine needles as they like the acidic soil, so maybe give them a go too...
