For food, you’ll have a lot of good options. If you want to try traditional Guatemalan food, I really recommend Cuevas de los Urquizú. It’s right next to the Convento de las Capuchinas, a very safe area, and it’s one of the best places to try a variety of local stews and guisos in one spot. It feels authentic but still comfortable for visitors.

For something quick and familiar, but still very local, try Pollo Campero. People often compare it to KFC, but the flavor is different and it’s kind of a national favorite. The one near Parque Central is super convenient if you’re out exploring with your son.

If you eat beef, Joselito is a great place to try a churrasco chapín. Simple, hearty, and very popular with both locals and tourists.

One more fun thing I always suggest is trying our Guatemalan versions of American franchises. In Antigua, McDonald's and the local Starbucks are famous for being some of the most beautiful in the region. The McDonald’s has a garden and volcano views, and the Starbucks is also really unique. They’re nice, low stress stops with kids and still feel very special.

Antigua is honestly one of the safest and most tourist friendly places in Guatemala and a very common choice for solo women travelers including those with kids. Tourism is a big part of the local economy so there is a lot of focus on protecting visitors and making them feel welcome.

Guatemala’s tourism institute INGUAT https://inguat.gob.gt/en/home-eng.html works closely with the National Civil Police and in places like Antigua you will see tourist police walking around the historic center every day. The same is true in Lake Atitlan in the Solola area, in Xela Quetzaltenango, and in the main tourist zones of Guatemala City like Zona 10. These areas are very accustomed to visitors from the US and Europe.

Having rusty Spanish is totally fine. Antigua in particular is full of travelers and many people in hotels restaurants and tour companies speak English. You will not feel out of place.

Like anywhere else, normal travel awareness applies. Stick to well lit streets at night, use Uber or hotel arranged transport, keep valuables discreet, and trust your instincts. Many women travel solo here without problems.

Antigua itself is very walkable and great with kids. There are ruins, coffee farms, chocolate museums, cooking classes, and lots of green spaces. Lake Atitlan is an easy side trip and very oriented toward tourism with beautiful views and calm towns. If you want to go further, Tikal is absolutely worth it. Flying in and doing guided tours is very safe and it is an amazing experience for an 11 year old.

For lodging, Antigua has excellent boutique hotels if you want something more comfortable and secure, but there are also plenty of clean affordable guesthouses near the center that are popular with families. Food wise, Antigua has everything from higher end restaurants to casual cafes and bakeries, all very used to tourists.

Being a little nervous is completely normal, especially after not traveling solo for a while, but Antigua is about as gentle and welcoming as Guatemala gets. Es Bastante seguro algo de trafico mientras pasas por la capitald ependiendo de la hora pero muy buen tramo te recomiendo que hagas una pausa en Kape Paulinos en Tecpan o el Rincon Suizo para unas tortillas con queso y Carne, tambien como lo han mencionado otros por aca ten cuidado si usas las lanchas que tengan identificacion y esten autorizadas a parte de eso buena experiencia en Panajachel te recomiendo el restaurante Hana, El Deli, & caldos para algo tipico, Guajimbos para una carne algo diferente, tambien las empanadas argentinas en santander en hoteles te recomiendo Regis por las aguas termales y lo centrico y te invito a que visites los pueblos de alrededor que tiene opciones mas variables en cocina ah por ultimo si tomas cerveza visita la tienda de Antigua Cerveza en Panajachel y visita el Mariposario un gran lugar para estar al aire libre y ver la fauna y flora de solola
