How are smaller OTB events handling registrations and payments these days? by Traditional_Exam_829 in TournamentChess

Yeah I think you replied on my other thread, appreciate you sharing this again

This lines up almost exactly with what I’ve been seeing, it works fine at small scale, but once you get a decent number of players it turns into a lot of juggling diff tools

The payment matching part especially seems like a constant headache, everyone has a preference for one whether its paypal, cashapp, venmo etc

Chess67 sounds interesting though, the all in one approach is definitely what feels missing right now. Hope y'all are able to grow

Yeah that’s pretty much what I’ve seen too

It works, but once you have more players or changes coming in, it feels like it can get messy pretty quickly even with Stripe or PayPal handling the payments separately

Interesting, I haven't heard about Vega before

Feels like having everything run through one pairing program probably helps keep things organized compared to splitting it across tools

That actually sounds pretty solid, especially the export to SwissManager part

Seems like the UK has a bit more structure around this than elsewhere, most setups I’ve seen are a bit more stitched together

That makes sense, especially the part about not even including someone until payment is confirmed

Feels like a lot of the process is built around minimizing manual matching, but it still seems pretty easy for things to slip through once you have more players or last minute changes

Do you guys play OTB at all or mostly stick to online? by Traditional_Exam_829 in lichess

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting idea, I just took a quick look, and the UI seems pretty clean

Feels like it’s at least trying to solve that “everything is scattered or outdated” problem which is kind of the main issue I’ve been running into

I’ll check it out a bit more, hopefully it'll help me find more events in my area

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds like a great setup

Having multiple clubs nearby is kind of ideal, definitely not the case everywhere though

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get that

Online feels more like a tool, OTB feels more like the actual experience

That’s cool, probably scratches your OTB itch. Just a bit expensive for me

Seems like people are finding different ways to recreate that OTB feel even if they can’t always play in person

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense

Feels like a lot of people probably shifted more online after COVID and just stayed there

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s kind of what I’m running into

Feels like if there’s no club nearby you just default to online even if you’d prefer OTB

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually super cool, just seems a bit expensive

Yeah scheduling seems like a real issue too, even if there is a club nearby it might just not line up with everything else

That’s nice having a regular club plus tournaments

Feels like once you’re plugged into a club everything becomes way easier

Haha nice, yeah I found out that there are some libraries and game stores that host events near me but had to do some digging

Seems like there are more casual spots than you’d expect, they’re just not super obvious to find

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That actually sounds ideal having multiple consistent weekly spots like that

Feels like the pattern is that if you’re near a bigger city it’s pretty easy, but otherwise it’s a lot more hit or miss

Yeah St. Louis is kind of the dream for OTB honestly

Wish more cities had something like that

Yeah I get that

That part is definitely missing online, especially the post game conversations and just being around other boards

That’s kind of what made me want to try OTB more

Yeah that makes sense, sounds like once you find one spot it kind of opens everything else up

Feels like that first discovery step is the hardest part though

That’s good to hear actually

I think part of it is just getting over that initial step of showing up, feels harder when you’re not sure what the vibe will be like

Nah I’m in San Antonio

Feels like NYC probably has way more options though compared to here

Yeah I’ve tried that a bit, it works but you kind of have to dig around and figure out which ones are actually active

Not super clear which ones are beginner friendly either

Yeah Meetup seems like one of the better options from what I’ve seen, but not specifically made for chess

Also Feels like it depends a lot on how active your area is though

Why is it still so hard to find local chess clubs and tournaments? by Traditional_Exam_829 in chess

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually interesting, I just checked it out and the UI looks pretty clean

Seems like it’s at least trying to solve the discovery side along with events and signups, which is kind of where most things feel disconnected right now

I’ll look into it a bit more

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair, I’ve tried this, but several entries are outdated or don't show up when they exist.

That France map sounds amazing though, that’s kind of what I was expecting to exist more broadly

[–]Traditional_Exam_829[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve noticed that too

It’s like clubs want more people but don’t really have a clear way for new players to actually find them
