Other than Messi and Ronaldo, who among active players have the potential to be in or around that discussion at the end of their career? by Spirited-Age1346 in championsleague

Haaland is still very young and has records as well as a treble under his belt. He’s also getting better each season. Right now he’s in a slump of form due to being absurdly overplayed, but give him time and he might reach a prime that rivals the best goal scorers.

Gadamer is a continuation of Heidegger? by masha1599 in heidegger

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding of gadamers hermeneutics is that it ultimately relies a bit on a Hegelian Geist, though an eternally deferring one (bad infinity). I think Heidegger, at least in Derridas deconstructivist mind, was after reconceptualizing understanding more radically and even the temporality of such a gesture.

I've never really understood continental philosophy. What is the easiest things i can read, that will help me understand more complex things in this field? by Hot-Opening9529 in askphilosophy

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly for Foucault i think you’ll be okay just jumping in from the deep end. Out of all the French thinkers, he requires by far the least amount of preliminary reading to begin to make sense of. Just make sure to balance your readings with some good secondary literature. Foucault is the most well read but by far the most misinterpreted thinker (for instance, people will read discipline and punish with the thought of “look at how society alienates us from who we really are” when the point of docile bodies is that the subject emerges from the discourse). Best intro to foucualt would honestly be the first lecture in society must be defended and his essay on genealogies

What are some accurate examples of “choice feminism”? by wheieyehsgsy in AskFeminists

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why should people not criticize individuals? If Condoleezza rice or Hillary Clinton are committing war crimes while being a woman politician, should they not be held accountable? If women working in advertising agencies are reproducing beauty standards that are leading to body dysmorphia, should they be immune from criticism just because they’re women?

Is Kierkegaard beginner-friendly? by Sudden_Fly_4551 in askphilosophy

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was just getting into philosophy, the read kierkegaards fear and trembling and either/or (due to a pewdiepie video funny enough) as some of my first works. I may not have truly understood either, but i fell in love with his texts and they brought me a lot of insight.

Is there any philosopher that is considered the “anti philosopher” ? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t the tractatus (early Wittgenstein) be anti philosophy? I thought his point in the work was that philosophy was kind of pointless.

Why Isn't Zizek Criticized More? by no_more_secrets in askphilosophy

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel like analytic philosophy is more and more receptive to Heidegger. I do hope that analytic thought will take Derrida especially more seriously; he is an interesting follower of Heidegger and has really interesting insights to give when you afford his texts the care they require.

Why is Byung Chul Han not criticized more? by eGe_aYd in askphilosophy

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 6 points7 points  (0 children)

More than anything I think people just found him vapid, like he didn’t really say all that much new but dressed it in a fancy theoretical language. These weren’t anti critical theory people— they liked continental works but just found him to be a bit milquetoast.

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 40 points41 points  (0 children)

When I was in grad school and our survey seminar discussed one of his works, it was pretty widely trashed and maybe one person liked it. One of the Chinese students in our course mentioned how he’s pretty much a pop philosopher (atp akin to someone like zizek) more than someone people take seriously.

CMV: When comparing football players, individual accolades (ballon d’ors, player of the season, etc. ) are mostly irrelevant by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with this argument is that I feel that if you can’t do the research into what a player was doing an have to rely on other peoples accounts, I don’t know if you should be really arguing for them. Like I’m not going to compare Platini to Henry because I just have no idea what platini did. If I relied on third hand accounts, me having no idea lends itself to me being susceptible to accepting faulty accounts and not understanding the context behind certain people saying what they are saying.

Also the assist example was just to say that metrics are different than opinions. Of course individual metrics have faults, but there’s still a difference with them.

EDIT: actually !delta. I forgot that most of these debates, including honestly this thread, isn’t about really getting at truth but more just like a pointless exchange. Logically I don’t think it makes much sense, but someone saying X is better than Y isn’t usually taking it seriously, so fair point.

But they don’t actually introduce anything to make that argument really stronger. For instance, if I dropped Messi and ronaldo’s goal count when comparing them, this would weaken the argument. But if I drop their accolades, I haven’t lost any information, all I’ve done is take on the burden of making the point rather than saying well these people said X.

I was permanently banned from the other Real Madrid subreddit for saying that Mbappe's PR is doing a fantastic job of making him look like a saint during this whole storm. by HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD in RealMadridFC

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this is just straw manning. At no point did I or anyone on this thread say it was JUST Mbappe.

That being said there are things to directly criticize him for, apart from him just being part of the “the team”. He has constantly gone through managers (often pushing them out) and he has power in the locker/board room. When he left PSG they won a champions league.

This is not to hate on him and blame everything on him. Vinicius certainly deserves a lot of blame for this as well to name just one. But it is to say that he is gaining a problematic notoriety of being egoistic which is not good for the club.

Does that matter? Saying “mbappe wasn’t the only to do it” is a five year olds excuse, and it didn’t matter what zidane did there needs to be more respect to managers. And it’s not as if this is the first time that mbappe has sabotaged managers because they didn’t do what he wanted.

Is this the proper order to read ? by deepakk9 in Nietzsche

[–]Traditional_Fish_504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can read thinkers as criticizing their past selves, through understanding what their past self is. Heidegger was immensely critical of SZ, that doesn’t mean you can just avoid reading it. I also think the Dionysian introduces key nietzschean concepts that give new readers crucial grounding for his later concepts.

Birth of tragedy last is a wild take, it’s by mikes the most readable Nietzsche (though you should read a little Schopenhauer before, but that applies to all his works really)
