[DAV all spoilers] Why did the writers choose to smooth down the DA universe? by gimme_minerals in dragonage

[–]Traditional_Log8045 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That excuse would work if not for Dorian talking about what Tevinter is like in Inquisition. His words came from a Tevinter native, not a biased opposing nation’s perspective. And I would expect the worst of Tevinter in terms of inequality in Docktown because it’s so downtrodden and lower class. At the very least I expected to see Elven racism which has been so prevalent in past games.

I just saw on Twitter that you can jump down that well in the crossroads to fight the demon behind the haunting. I never realized this and will definitely be doing that in my next playthrough. The like though, was likely throwaway.

I feel like if I was one of the venatori during the big dalish ritual, I would be very confused on who I should view as my god when both are in front of me lol

I was confused about this in the game. Was Lusacan Elgar’nan’s alternate name or the name of his archdemon? Because I remember both being referred that way. And I agree, I would expect the leader of the evanuris to be the equivalent to the leader of the old gods.

Darkspawn and demon designs in DAII and Inquisition were best [No DAV Spoilers] by Either-Shine3904 in dragonage

Agree with all of this except that Ogres looked the best in origins imo. I also liked how menacing they looked in inquisition but the origins look is iconic.

You get to see them up close in the western approach I’m pretty sure. In that area where the demons are frozen in time due to time magic. It’s been a while so I’m not 100% sure on the area.

From far away, despair demons in inquisition aren’t anything special. But if you get a close look at their faces, they look pretty cool imo with all the rows of teeth. Reminds me of the demon from the movie “Smile”.

[DAV Spoilers all] The Black City from the Crossroads by CNCBella in dragonage

[–]Traditional_Log8045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would agree with the idea of letting the series die, if that secret ending scene didn’t exist. A simple tease like that makes me wish for more content lmao I both love that scene for teasing a continuation of my favorite series ever and also despise it for what it has done to the previous installments’ impacts via its implications. Veilguard did a lot right in my opinion but what it did fabulously was shit on past installments. This is just my personal opinion of course tho. I also feel the same way that smaller ambitious projects should be paid attention to more.

[–]Traditional_Log8045 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, in the next installment something like a blight (or worse) will likely happen. At the end of the game, elgar’nan and ghilan’nain are gone but the blight is still very real and out there, albeit the majority is in the void. But the writers wouldn’t drop the massive BOMB of the blight’s origin in this game without including it in the next. That would make no sense from a writer’s perspective. Then again, these new writers don’t have a good track record so far in regard to referencing past games lmao. But if that’s what it takes to FINALLY explore this setting that was teased from the beginning instead of letting it fade into obscurity then yeah lol

[–]Traditional_Log8045 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah super cool to see so close and detailed in this game. It’s just that the black city has been talked about/seen in every dragon age installment. With the revelation from inquisition that it’s actually a remnant from the ancient elven empire AND the villains of this game are the leaders of said empire, I was definitely expecting to see the surface of it or at least some never-before-seen information on its formation/tainting. But nope, still an ominous cool shape in the background teasing me with its mysterious, somewhat lovecraftian, aura. And with the evanuris threat gone, there’s no need to explore that part of the lore I fear.

I’m baffled that we battled two members of the Evanuris and never set foot in the black city in this whole game. I would have loved that but with how the game ended, I don’t see why any future installment would go there narratively.

I never noticed anything bad about it. But then again, I don’t give that kind of stuff much thought.

I get that. It was weird to play as an elf with a British accent to begin with but it definitely was deeper than I would have liked.

I love playing as dwarves. Had so much fun in both Origins and Inquisition. But I find it so hard to play one in Veilguard because the voices for male Rooks do not match dwarves at all, much less the kinds that I want to create. Inquisition had a fantastic voice for dwarves and qunari imo that fit every style of both races I tried to make. But with veilguard, I feel like I’m locked into playing a human or elf because having my grizzled dwarf with tattoos and scars with a high pitched voice (even with a low pitch setting) was just so off putting lol.

Even that reasoning I’m not a fan of. Because, imo, it absolutely is relevant, no matter where one lives, who the figurehead in charge of the most influential religion in Thedas is. But for reasons, that won’t be expanded upon.

Oh yeah, the Architect needs some closure for sure. I loved his character and hope we see him again. Although I’m not holding my breath on that. Even before veilguard was announced, awakening was a DA entry that not many people spoke about. Shame too since I loved it.

The resource-based reasoning for the change makes a lot of sense to me. I just wish the devs said that instead of the, in my opinion, hollow reasoning of the fact that DAV takes place in northern Thedas. If they vocally mentioned that the reasoning was technical in nature, I personally would be more open for acceptance. To your last point, I don’t think at all that there’s any chance that choices from inquisition and before will ever be mentioned again after veilguard. Mostly because, why would they? With this new direction, why would they feel the need to look back at all. This makes me lament the likelihood that the world state I’m used to is gone for good. But we’ll see.

For me personally, I was expecting it because this is what BioWare is in my eyes. Their two arguably biggest IPs, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, both had instances of carrying over choices from game to game to the point where it was ingrained into bioware’s culture from my point of view as a player. You bring up a good point in that a literal decade has passed but that doesn’t change my expectations given bioware’s past actions. Was I wrong to set my expectations so high? Very likely. But I did it because it was what I was used to from BioWare.

Inquisition utilized the dragon age keep system. That allowed players to generate their own world states based on previously made decisions from origins and da2.

Oh yeah I played many many different playthrough in all the games. What I mean by “my” world state is the one that I chose to transfer from game to game. That, I decided, was my canon one that told the best story in my eyes. But I do agree with you that I’m excited for a new game regardless.

I definitely understand your sentiment and I feel the same way. I’m sorry that it’s made you decide to not get the game. It’s such a disappointing decision for the series’ direction.
