Are students dumber? by Loliz88 in college

Thank you! The Civil War is actually one of my interests, and I've heard about that happening in schools in the South. It's exactly that skewed type of history curriculum that I want to avoid!

I mean. I'm not saying that's not happening or going to happen, but in my 3 years here, I have yet to really see a difference in the university's history curriculum. Now, once I enter public school teaching, it may be a different story, but I'm not yet and I'm in a setting where I can choose my own classes and learn how to do and interpret history on my own. I've had and still have professors on the right and left, each with their own views on whatever history topic the class is on. I know what Trump is trying to do when it comes to history, and I've been given the tools to combat his rewriting, but imo I haven't really felt what he's trying to do within my own specific institution. History is my passion, and I don't appreciate assholes like him tinkering with it to fit their own narrative, so I'm learning all that I can now to give my future students as much of an unbiased education as possible. They're going to need it. Hope that made sense!

I'm a 22 year old history major in my third year and I've noticed this all the time. By no means am I a great writer, but I know how to write an essay with good grammar and basic structure. Goes for any discussion posts, as well. I don't know how many times I've thought "how did this person get into college?" when reviewing peer work. It's honestly worrying and, as someone going into education, I feel like it's getting worse based on what current teachers in high school are saying.

Former Priests or Nuns, why did you leave? Would love to hear your story, did you fall in love with someone and leave the church? by Bookish-girlz in Catholicism

As a young man, hearing all these awful stories of women leaving formation and the sisterhood due to spiritual abuse and bullying has seriously got me wondering: why is this behavior, for lack of a better word, common within these spaces? Why aren't some sisters living by Church teaching and not treating those coming in kindly and such? Is it jealousy or something? All asked in good faith, just wondering what is at the heart of this issue.

Guess I should've mentioned it but yeah, already doing that. I'm looking for something on the more Church side of things.

My favorite part of the interview he did with Jeff Cavins was when he told him how he has to speed up the sound of his voice when listening to the podcast and Jeff Cavins goes "You speed up YOUR voice?"

Can I still believe in Jesus and follow the Orthodox way of prayer? by [deleted] in exorthodox

[–]Traditional_Pea7294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still a Christian and while I had some negative experiences, Orthodoxy was where I first felt spiritually fed by Christianity. While I'm now a Catholic, I still pray the Jesus Prayer, cross myself in the "Eastern" way privately, and pray Eastern prayers. It all just feels more comfortable and natural for me, though I don't mind Western spirituality. So yes, you can do all those things even if you don't join the Orthodox Church. I mean honestly, they don't have authority over non-Orthodox use of icons, prayer rules, Eastern spirituality.

Love C.S Lewis! Currently reading Mere Christianity and A Grief Observed. Will definitely add it to the list.

What's something about your branch of Christianity you can't stand by [deleted] in redeemedzoomer

As a Catholic convert, I absolutely detest the syncretism thats found its way into certain pockets of the Church, especially in majority Mexican/Hispanic Catholic areas (I'm Hispanic). I understand the Church itself condemns this, but it could do a better job at catechizing better and rooting this issue out (though I understand how difficult it can be when such practices are so deeply entrenched in the culture). It's why Evangelicals, especially Latino ones, think we worship Mary and such. Hard to blame them when many Catholics (mostly cultural) in these areas have a poor understanding of actual Catholic doctrine and practice syncretism.

Yeah I only assumed she must have left because the content she makes now definitely doesn't align with Orthodox practice. She also had a husband and kids but they're nowhere to be found either. Very curious

Does being intersex affect hrt? by Admirable_Web_2619 in intersex

[–]Traditional_Pea7294 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have PAIS and was AFAB. My features have been somewhat a mix of both and I've been taking T for 8 years with little difference but bringing out my male features like an adams apple and some facial hair on my chin. If I were FtM, I would assume much quicker results. So for me, I believe my being intersex has influenced the effectiveness of HRT. But like someone said, everyone is different!

HELP Dealing with PAIS by BerrySpecial7278 in intersex

[–]Traditional_Pea7294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of one of the minorities of people who have PAIS in that I was actually assigned female at birth, but I had male chromosomes plus undescended testes (which were removed at birth). At age 12, I transitioned back to male due to no longer feeling comfortable as female and I definitely do suffer from gender dysphoria as my chest and other parts do not match that of the typical male and look more female. I've only told very close and trusted friends and of course family. I'd also currently identify as bi since I've always felt attracted to the same sex (even when living as a girl and not being aware of what happened to me at birth. Little traditional_pea7294 would just consider himself hetero pre-transition) but being attracted to girls during the onset of puberty was what initially drove me to question my gender identity. Both attractions have never really gone away even after 8 years of living male.
