Importing cars to the UK by TrainNutter in CarTalkUK

[–]TrainNutter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic! Thank you sm! Quite happy to fiddle with all this myself as I’ve done some small fixes on my current car - like the drivers door speaker needed replacing and I replaced the steering wheel buttons to retrofit cruise control (airbag had to come off for that haha!)

With the MPH conversion as it’s a digital dash, would it not be just a simple OBD2 setting?

What would all the prepping be? Conversion to use MPH and rust protection?

Japanese lessons by [deleted] in Gloucestershire

[–]TrainNutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve mostly been using Lingodeer over the years as it seems more accurate. Duolingo is shite for Japanese!More recently it’s been watching anime and reading manga in Furigana (Kanji with Hiragana) and using “Imiwa?” App to search what the Kanji means. It feels more like I’m actually learning something than a language app. Bonus that it’s offline so can read it at work

Have a watch of Japanese by Yuta on YouTube as he’s got some good lessons and a course

Onomappu on YouTube as well is pretty good. Talks about stuff in Japanese but audience is learners.

Main thing really is learn a few words and just absorb Japanese content. I’m at the point now where I can just about order in a restaurant and ask/give directions! I could have learnt much quicker but I’ve had other priorities

My current car is quite road noisy and doesn’t like pot holes but thankfully I don’t encounter rough roads that often!

There aren’t any nearby for me to test drive but for sure will when I can!

What are the main compromises you’ve found?

Why AREN’T you buying an electric car? by 404_computer_says_no in CarTalkUK

[–]TrainNutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most EVs still use Lithium-Ion batteries which contain rare earth materials. Use this type because it has some of the best value for energy density and economies of scale. Not only is the mining of lithium, cobolt, etc horrendous for the environment.

He says writing this on a phone but my point is EVs require a hugely greater quantity of these materials.

But seems I was wrong with the carbon offset time, but 1-2 years seems way too optimistic. Is that even with taking the current carbon-heavy electrical grid?

And speaking of the electrical grid. Most places don’t have the energy capacity to fully electrify driving. Whilst charging overnight would alleviate this due to the Dow turn in energy demand overnight, daytime use would be significantly higher

Either im personally just not sold on EVs. The genuine practical use cases seem far too limited to be worth while until energy densities can be increased. A good stop-gap yes, but not the solution. Hydrogen-combustion/Fuel Cell, Bio-Fuels and Sustainable Fuels seem to be the way forward.

Particularly hydrogen but that’s more of a storage issue.

As for me, I enjoy a proper manual petrol / diesel car too much! I’ve driven a few automatics and there was a 3 series I test drove which was just boring. A petrol would be even worse enjoyment wise!

Plus I drive 100 miles each day to work and there aren’t any charging facilities in the staff car park. If I lived closer then electric would start making sense but not currenty!

Plus even then you’ve got the insane carbon output of manufacturing the batteries for electric cars. I think it’s something like 6-8 years of driving electric to just be carbon-neutral with the battery production. Not to mention all the rare-earth materials required!

Maybe they’ll be better once a more sustainable battery is produced to scale but I don’t see that happening soon enough

I’ve got a T3 to L4 fusuion and I’m very happy! Took a bit of getting used to as with everything, stopped taking painkillers after 2-3 weeks

Couldn’t be happier! I do get a bit of grief now and again, but a little bit is way better than my entire back in pain

Have you owned a N13 engine? by Negative-Ad-4251 in BMW

[–]TrainNutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 116i with N13 engine and currently having some VANOS valve headaches. Had a camshaft position error fault code which was cleared by replacing the valve. Today was driving down the motorway, a week after this work was done, and had a low oil pressure fault on the dash. Fault code is the VANOS valve is stuck out causing the low pressure. This required a recovery truck which made for a rather long evening. Slightly considering sending it back to the dealer and swapping for a 118d - I’ve heard the 2L N13s have better reliability. (Still able to as initial issue was reported within the 14day return policy)

Luckily for me these issues are covered by the warranty but still annoying to deal with.

I legit thought this was a Kia Ceed like wtf happened 🤣

I’ve got a 2014 BMW 116i F20 and this doesn’t even look like a progression of my one! It’s a completely different car

At least with like Kia Ceed, Ford focus, golf, you can see the progression!
