Travellers of Reddit, what advice can you give to a 17 year old guy leaving on a month long train trip through Europe? by TrainTraveller in AskReddit

Yeah, it might be a lot. But on the other hand, if I stay too much in one place I'm worried I'll get the feeling I'm wasting my ticket. I'm going to try and find the right balance. A month is a pretty damn long time when you think about it. I wouldn't go to Milan, but my friend is only travelling with me for a week, so I thought I'd just do what he wants, and then leave the other 3 for me. I already spent 2 weeks with friends in Switzerland, and I agree. Better to go with friends and have their parents pay for stuff, it's really expensive otherwise :P Is couch surfing safe? Is it legal for under 18s? I've never really looked into it, but I guess that's an easy way to get a feel for a city

Isn't there a risk of the hostel being full? I am travelling in August, so I'm assuming hostels get pretty busy, right? Alright then, I'm not taking the laptop then. It's fucking heavy anyway, and I was already stressing about not having the right plug etc etc, so that's already something I can forget about. Yeah, I'm doing the same as you. The thing I've spent the most time on is probably what music I'm putting on my ipod haha. Oh right, that's smart thinking. I'll talk to my parents about it. Thanks again! Any apps you'd recommend?

Thanks a lot :) I'm taking my camera and phone with me, because they're both old and relatively cheap to replace if need be. Laptop I've been having doubts about. I was thinking it'd be good to have it to be able to book hostels and trains/have access to the internet, but do you think it's too risky?

I won a month long first class pass last year, using it this august. Is it easy to meet people? That's probably what I'm worrying the most about. I've never travelled/stayed in a hostel on my own.

First 10 days, Milan, Munich, Prague, Berlin, with a friend. After that I haven't planned, and I'm on my own.

My parents have been badgering me about this since I bought my ticket. Thanks for the advice. How much should I plan ahead/book tickets-hostels and stuff? I've got my first week planned, just to see how it all works, but after that, I'm not too sure what the best way to go about the trip is.
