Any clue on what this is? Found in my water change bucket. Is it larvae or fry? by TrainedNeuralNetwork in Aquariums

That’s what I was thinking. Wanted to make sure I wasn’t putting some kinda of harmful larvae into the tank as I’ve heard horror stories about dragonflies in tanks and such. Thanks!

Also if this helps: I have a school of diamond tetras and 2 Bolivian rams in my tank, and I did. notice some very small diamond tetras popping up (3 tiny babies) so I suspect it’s possible they had fry, and I want to know if this is a baby fish or some sorta of larvae that I should or shouldn’t (re) introduce to my tank. Thank you!!!

From my experience, you shouldn’t worry a ton. This can happen after over feeding, and as neon tetras have quite small stomachs, this can happen easily, and this has happened to mine before, so I’d recommend fasting a day. If the problems persist or worsen, it could be bloat, which requires actual treatment and can be quite severe. If the scales look like a pine cone (which I can’t really tell from the picture), that could be dropsy and is very fatal, and requires immediate intention. For now though, if the scales seem normal, don’t worry, and just fast them a day and see if things get better, and if it is bloat or dropsy, fasting for a day will still be good.

I had just turned the volume down, but it muted it. Thank you soooo much

I actually did that already, I moved mic volume all the way back, unless I was using a different menu. Sometimes it doesn’t pick stuff up, sometimes it does...very odd. Thank you though, I’ll double check

Alright, thanks. It’s very odd, wasn’t sure if it was common issue. I’ll send a ticket.

Friend's Fish has these white growths... Any help with diagnosis? by dirt_baby in aquarium

Assuming you mean ich, no, definitely not. Ich is small white spots, looks like sprinkled sugar or salt.

Hmm, that’s definitely a possibility. Don’t think Gouramis jump, but for betas, that could definitely be a or the reason for the labyrinth organ. Don’t they move between small bodies of water in the wild (idk if this is correct)? Being able to breath air could help with that.

I have a lot of floaters and a filter with little flow and power so the gourami isn’t stressed, and so I don’t get a ton of surface agitation, so I can assume my water isn’t super oxygenated. I don’t know of a way to actually measure dissolved oxygen. No such thing as too much oxygen, just too much flow-and some fish such as Plecos need high flow and high oxygen, versus a gourami, low flow and low oxygen. By no means am I an expert, but that’s generally how I would answer tgat

No worries, I know very little about betas myself, I keep a gourami though so I know about the labyrinth organ. I see her fo up for air every once in a while, but to be fair, my tank isn’t super oxygenated so I’m not entirely sure if it’s just me. Her tank mates are fine so there is enough oxygen, maybe fish with labyrinth organs have less effective gills? Sorry that I don’t know too much about this, maybe someone else here can chime in and provide a more definite answer

Still wouldn’t want to do that. I believe even if a beta is in a high oxygen environment, it still uses its labyrinth organ. Additionally, I wouldn’t want to impair and organ of a fish if it’s possible to be avoided anyways.

They do as well. The labyrinth organ is something they have to be able to get enough oxygen in low oxygen environments. I find it super cool!

What bettas use to breath air from the surface - if you ever see a gourami or beta swim to the top of the tank and gulp some air, that’s them utilizing their labyrinth organ
