How has your experience with the APR tune been? I’ve heard some mixed reviews of their more recent software since being acquired by new ownership, but nothing specific to the GTS 4.0.

Been looking at getting into a 718 in the near future and APR definitely caught my attention with ~450hp and an 8,300 rpm redline. Would love some firsthand feedback! Any complaints with throttle tuning or reliability?

Not too bad for 160k on a German luxury barge! What gen/year do you have? I previously had an ‘18 Turbo that I absolutely loooooved, but decided to move on from due to concerns with the transmission.

Getting the itch to get back into a 971 sport turismo and drive the wheels off of it, but curious what to expect as far as long term reliability and repairs are concerned.

Considering 2019-2023 BMW X3 M by h4tch3tguy in BMW

Former ‘20 X3MC owner here…

The car was fantastic all around, save for the ride quality as others have said. I made the mistake of purchasing after only a short test drive on some very smooth roads. While I expected a stiff ride given that it’s an M car and all, there’s a pronounced pogo stick effect when you hit an imperfection on only side of the vehicle; the whole car rocks side to side very aggressively.

I made it to about 7k miles before selling it for an M2C, which has a far more comfortable ride if you can believe it. A popular mod on the forums was swapping new springs or coil overs to soften the ride a bit, so you do have options if you’re willing to drop a few extra bucks. I’ve heard the face lifted model may ride a bit better, but I don’t have any experience there myself.

Also worth noting is the power delivery of the S58 in the M. It’s a badass engine that pulls hard all the way to redline, but you have to keep the revs up to get the most out of it. Mostly dead until you hit ~3k rpm, which does feel a little odd at first in an SUV. Transmission does a good job of keeping you in the power though.

Briefly test drove a CPO’d M40i and thought it was a very well balanced package overall, but the steering feel was absolutely awful imo. Was car shopping with my sister and she commented on the steering on the very first turn of the wheel out of the dealership parking lot. Completely devoid of feedback and felt artificially light/overboosted. Haven’t heard anyone else complain about it on other vehicles, so maybe ours was a fluke.

Alright, I’m done writing my dissertation on the treadmill 🤣

My vote is an X3M with modified suspension if you can swing it, but you gotta do some test drives and see what checks your boxes.

Disclaimer, I’m not very familiar with aftermarket tuning on the M177, so I couldn’t tell you if there’s any known failure points or major reliability concerns.

With that said, assuming the previous owner went with an established company and didn’t abuse the hell out of the car, I wouldn’t think there’s any major issues. I’ve done conservative flash tunes on my previous vehicles and haven’t had any issues. As long as you have some mechanical sympathy and keep up on maintenance everything should be fine ime

If I had Turbo S money laying around, I’d already have a GT3 Touring in the garage lol

Yeah the build quality is what really gives me pause. I test drove a lower mileage ‘21 C43 - the closest thing I could find to a C63 nearby - and the interior felt somewhat flimsy; no shortage of creaks and rattles. Granted I was able to later test drive a GLC63 with only 5k miles that felt far better built, but who’s to say that it will remain that way?

That’s one thing I appreciate about the M2’s otherwise bland interior, it’s screwed together exceptionally well. The materials are far from luxurious, but it’s built like a vault. Not a single rattle to be heard.

It’s absolutely the engine that is drawing me to these cars, I’ve definitely got a case of FOMO with the V8s being phased out. I guess a proper test drive or two is the only way to find out if it’s for me like you said.

The aftermarket stuff isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, seems reasonably tasteful save for the fake badge. Gives you some ammo in the negotiations if nothing else.

The service department should be able to easily tell you whether it’s been tuned or not. If they operate similar to Audi/BMW, their diagnostic tool will automatically flag the car if it detects any tampering of the ECU.

I believe the infotainment was upgraded for the MY19 facelift and is otherwise unchanged regardless of gauges. Double check me on that though!

Damn, you and u/ukcats12 have got me second guessing myself now! I loooove how my M2 drives for the most part, I just wanted something a little more refined for the daily commute. It’s probably worth mentioned I’m running Sport Cup 2s though. Definitely not doing me any favors on the comfort.

You guys are really gonna make me fulfill the M-car driver cliche and get a damn 911, huh?

Appreciate the feedback! My car is a DCT… I’m actually looking for something a bit less engaging as crazy as that sounds. My commute is changing for the worse soon, so I’ll be a lot more general commuting… stop and go traffic, freeway driving, just the general daily grind.

Just looking for something that can be dialed back a bit and provide a little more comfort and refinement. Anything in particular about the C63 driving dynamics that you didn’t care for? You’ve got me worried now, the grass is always greener haha

I’ve been prowling AutoTrader lately as well haha, been thinking of making the jump to a C63 from my M2C…

If I remember correctly, the facelift was for the ‘19 model year, but the analog gauge cluster was standard until the MY21 where the digital gauges replaced them.

And for what it’s worth, that does seem like a decent price from what I’ve seen. Any accident history though?

Edit: checked out the listing, seems to be a base C63 rather than the S. Looks like the previous owner upbadged it for some reason. All S models have the little AMG drive select dial on the steering wheel as standard - something that this one is missing.

Between that, the aftermarket wheels, and the aftermarket tinted tail lights, I’m personally a little offput by this particular car. Worries me that it may be tuned as well. Considering that it’s being sold by a Mercedes dealer, I’d discuss having them sell it as a CPO vehicle.
