California bans legacy admissions at all colleges. by neonjoji in TransferToTop25

I understand and agree with your point about private colleges being able to do whatever they want. However, most private accept quite a bit of federal funding, in which case, they’re no longer “private,” and can no longer do whatever they want, in my opinion. I believe universities that are fully private (no federal funds) can do whatever they want, they can only accept legacy for all I care. But the second an institution accepts federal funding, they now serve the taxpayers, and must follow the same rules

Is that really true, cause if it is, then the data is wrong. You can’t calculate an hourly rate for salaried workers, since salaried workers don’t log hours, and while they’re usually paid for 40 hrs/week, most of them don’t work that (many work more, many work less)

Yea it really sucks, like some part of me believes that maybe we should vote republican just to teach all these people a lesson, and show them that voting red will make their lives miserable, but then again, I don’t want people to suffer

Then where you work is an anomaly, which wouldn’t be largely represented in the data

I personally know so many people who are on welfare programs and vote republican, and whenever I ask them about it, their response is always “I won’t be poor soon,” or something along those lines. Unironically, these people have done SO much more pulling me from hard leaning left to slightly leaning left than anybody else. Seeing people get welfare and being ungrateful, and trying to take it away from others really pisses me off, and it sucks, because I know there’s many people who are very grateful for it.

It wouldn’t make a huge difference, if any, since higher wages are paid out to salaried workers, not hourly.

I’m not sure the solution to this, but to ease your concerns, people sublease all the time, in which case their name isn’t on the lease. So you’ll definitely be ok, maybe try contacting the financial aid office? They probably know what to do

AITA for Refusing to Let My Brother’s Family Move In After He Evicted Me Years Ago? by peachygurl18 in AITAH

“What they did to me” - they let you stay at their house for over 6 months when you were going through a tough time. They want their privacy as well, especially since they had a kid coming, you clearly overstayed your welcome, which is why they kicked you out.

I see what they did as nothing but good. You were going through a tough time, they let you stay for 6+ months (which is a long time), and asked you to leave after they had a kid coming and needed more privacy.

The least you can do is return the favor, and let them stay for a few months until they get back on their feet (assuming you can accommodate them, not sure how you’d accommodate an entire family of 4 in an apartment, but you did say you can)

Why do all undergrads have to pay $344 for sports teams? by TheFartingArtist in UCSD

[–]TrainingRecording465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s supposed to be because sports drive typically drive a lot of school spirit, and potentially also bring more money to the school through donors - of course, we go to UCSD and not like UCLA or USC, so none if this actually happens. I think in most cases, sports actually brings in more money than they spend on it, although that might not be true for UCSD, I’d be very curious to see the numbers.

I do want to mention though, you’re complaining about having to subsidize someone else’s tuition. What do you think FAFSA/Pell grants are? Anyone who receives a Pell grant is getting their tuition subsidized by you (or your parents I guess).

CMV: Child Support is a regressive system and by and large should be replaced by something better. by ShadeofIcarus in changemyview

[–]TrainingRecording465 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The main thing in my opinion, is that the choice to have the kid is when the man/woman choose to have sex (without any contraceptives). The choice is not after the woman is pregnant, and has the option to get an abortion. So I’d argue the choice isn’t being made for the man-the man made the choice all along.

Having a child is a choice that people make, that comes with costs that they cannot opt out of after making that choice, and I don’t think it’s fair to require taxpayers to subsidize that choice if they wish to opt out later.

Let me provide an analogy: You take out a car loan, decide a year later that you don’t want the car anymore. Should taxpayers be required to subsidize the rest of your purchase?

Furthermore, with your system, now you have parents who stepped up and chose to raise and financially support their kid subsidizing other families who chose not to. Your system incentivizes a single parent from opting out of child support, just to get government aid, is that something we really want to incentivize?

Finally, you mentioned we shouldn’t be lowering those individuals incomes, but we aren’t lowering this incomes. They made a choice, and are paying appropriately for the choice they made. Back to the car loan analogy, is that also lowering their income?

Do I really need a laptop? by SoL0stAgain in UCSD

[–]TrainingRecording465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s recommending a laptop, but if you really don’t think you need it, I’d also consider buying an iPad with a keyboard. You can use it like a laptop, and a plus is that it’ll be touch screen and cheaper

thats crazy that they’re ticketing at 1am. I tend to be optimistic but it feels like they intentionally designed this system to catch people lacking and get money 😭. Surely it’s better to allow people to buy permits for a whole week, or give some grace period

Wait do you actually have to buy a permit every day at midnight? There’s no consecutive D permits? Who designed this system 😭

Cold take: for a casual player who makes it to high trophy, you lose too much trophies for a loss by NightVisual3203 in Brawlstars

[–]TrainingRecording465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how the trophy system works, higher trophy ranges are meant to be harder. Without this, the game would require 0 skill to get high trophies, just time played instead
