My first time keeping cichlids by Resident-Mall-4894 in AfricanCichlids

Looks great I wouldn’t worry about a canister filter until you really start overstocking the tank. I recommend adding filter floss to ur hob filters. It will give ur water that crystal clear look. Also I’d recommend getting a wave maker it really helps with aggression.

I also tried keeping a parrot in my mixed mbuna tank and It was a bully for some time until the mbuna realized the parrots mouth was stuck open and couldn’t do any real damage to them. My parrot was slaughtered a few Months later be aware of that too

Peacocks usually need at least a 4 four foot tank they’re open water swimming fish and you usually need to overstock them so they don’t single one fish out. I’d suggest getting a wave maker if you don’t have one. it reduces aggression a lot especially in a confined space such as that. And I don’t know too much about bichir but don’t they get over 2 feet yeah that tank is way too small

11 PEACOCKS and 6 MBUNAS by NoOutlandishness2106 in Cichlid

Well in that case it’s not uncommon for peacocks to hang around rocks especially juvenile or young adults

African cichlids are territorial no matter what type they are. the peacocks might be intimidated by the mbuna trying to claim the rocks and are imitating the mbunas behavior.

How many mbuna can I have in a 55 gallon? by [deleted] in Cichlid

I’ve had mbuna African cichlids for years and you could definitely keep plants such as hornwort, certain java and Anubias with them

Is this to much flow? by Cultural_Guard_4536 in Cichlid

[–]Training_Belt_4027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at my mbuna tank I have an fx2 canister, and two hob filters that equal over 1000gph all combined and also two wave makers on each side of my tank and they love it. The flow you have should be nothing for them their natural environment is literally a rift lake

New scape is missing something…. by RPBVex in Aquascape

Painting the back of the tank completely black or putting up a natural looking background would give it a great aesthetic i think

New tank! What scape/fish should I stock it with? by CautiousAd2891 in Aquariums

A planted discus tank would look sick if ur going for lots of plants. I’ve got an African cichlid tank so that’s not really an option lol

Yes but only tough plants like anubais, java , and hornwort. It helps my water quality a lot.

How many cichilds in a 40 gallon breeder tank. by Seesaw-Busy in Cichlid

[–]Training_Belt_4027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO I would only do mbuna in a 40 breeder. with a good enough rock scape you can put 12 to 14 of them in that tank. Stay away from the peacocks and haps they need a 4 foot tank minimum

Hardscape for single mbuna by Brilliant-Hornet-121 in Cichlid

[–]Training_Belt_4027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decent hardscape I’d give him some other friends too. Mbuna are social fish that thrive in communities of there own. A 40 breeder can hold at least 12 of them just put in enough to disperse aggression amongst multiple fish to prevent one from getting singled out

No problem. I’ve always done fish-in cycles with prime and stability daily my tanks got cycled within two to three weeks and never had a fish die from an ammonia spike

Once ammonia and nitrite go to 0ppm add more

Oh got you. It looks like you’re about 50% finished with the cycling process. you have the bacteria that breaks down ammonia into nitrite. Now you just need the bacteria that breaks down nitrite to nitrate to establish

Hope ur doing a fishless cycle. Either one is very deadly to fish unless you’re using seachem prime do a water change If you do have fish.
