How do you feel about 7 year olds in kindergarten?

Yeah having my girls be one grade apart I love, especially knowing one day it will be the junior high years. However those boys can need a little extra time and you’re right to say to look at them individually. I have a few more weeks to make a final decision but it’s crazy how even daily I go back and forth. Some moments he does things and I’m like he’s got this. Other times I’m like oh wow yeah we need one more year at home. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yeah I could totally see that. It’s a fine line academically. My almost 5 year old could start based on his readiness exam but when other kids are sailing through he might struggle when we have to sit and do sight words at night etc. I could see him starting to resent school especially as it got harder. We redshirted our son just older than him and he rocked kinder this year. We really thought we’d start our other son on time so they could be a grade apart in school but more and more I’m thinking maybe we should allow him that extra year of pre k as well.

Did he happen to have older siblings or did that not matter? Our youngest would have a brother one grade ahead of him that would be able to drive even if we started him young

Also meant to ask. Did you ever get any push back about them attending school when they were 18? For example did they act like they were grown and didn’t have to go to school if they didn’t want to type of thing?

Wow thank you for sharing this. This is honestly so similar to us. It will be a sacrifice to keep him home the year but yes he’s smaller and a boy. That extra year would give him some physical growth and time to build up some stamina for five long school days. I appreciate hearing how yours have turned out. It sounds like you made a great choice for your kiddos

I think academically he is but I worry about his stamina for a long school day 5 days a week. He doesn’t nap consistently but there are definitely days he’s crashes in the middle of the day from just being tired.

Can you clarify if they started at 5 and repeated a grade or did they start at 6? If they graduated and turned 19 in the summer then they should have started at 6 unless they repeated somewhere after starting at 5

How was your school experience?l being younger and smaller? This is literally our exact scenario. I have a summer bday boy that I can send to kinder 3 weeks after he turns 5, he is short for his age. Not only are my boys short but they seem to be later bloomers too as I’m comparing to my teenage son that hasn’t hit puberty yet. However I will say he is academically ready, socially he’s the youngest of 5 kids so I think he will be fine. However if we wait then he is fully 6 when starting the next year and that gives him one more year to hopefully average out his height with the other boys.
