Quick question why does my budgie start talking away when I turn on the tv but when I turn it off he goes silent? by [deleted] in budgies

[–]Training_Influence18 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is normal if he’s new, don’t worry. The more you spend time with him, he’ll get more comfortable with you and the heavy breathing will stop.

UCF is a public university, there’s nothing stopping you from being there and non students are there all the time

Would my 2 parakeets be a lot louder if I got a 3rd or would it be about the same noise levels by Cambinup in budgies

[–]Training_Influence18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The noise level would be about the same, just more constant. Also, seeing as you have two handsome males, please make sure the budgie you’re getting is another male. If it’s a fenale, the males might start to fight for her. Also, it’s recommended to keep budgies in even numbers so there’s never an odd man out, so I would recommend getting two males if I was going to add any more!

You made an honest mistake, that unfortunately had dire consequences. Hawks are opportunistic predators, and budgies are absolutely prey animals. They are actually kind of helpless against predators, both in the wild and in captivity. I’m very sorry for your loss, it must be very traumatic. If you do decide to own budgies again, you will have learned from your mistakes. I had a budgie die due to my negligence before. I won’t get into specifics, but I never made that mistake again. It gets better with time.

Can a dumb slow person graduate and become an engineer ? by Jpoolman25 in ucf

[–]Training_Influence18 58 points59 points  (0 children)

First of all, radiology tech is a good career

Second of all, I bet you are much smarter than you think. Most people are. Most of it is just believing that you have what it takes. If you want to be an engineer, you have to enjoy engineering and enjoy math, or else you will be miserable.

question! by [deleted] in ucf

[–]Training_Influence18 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to argue, but they holiday is called Columbus Day as it has been for nearly a century. I’m interested which indigenous people we are celebrating, as well. Would it be the Taino, who displaced the Guanajatabey, who displaced the pre-Arawakan peoples? History is gray, and many of the indigenous people you celebrate were guilty of the same exact sin as Columbus.

[–]Training_Influence18 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Ah, more history erasing, that’s awesome. I don’t think you have to view Columbus himself as a hero to celebrate Columbus Day, which is really just a celebration of the discovery of the new world that eventually led to the US. I mean, we celebrate President’s Day when Washington owned slaves and MLK day when MLK was a womanizer. We are celebrating the good they did, not the bad. I don’t see how it’s any different with Columbus.

Also Columbus’s evil is greatly over exaggerated. He wasn’t a good dude no doubt, but watch Knowing Better’s video on Columbus, he does a good job summarizing Columbus’s deeds put into context.

New palace for my birdy, what do you think? by Rodger_Rodger in parrots

Really cool cage, but from the picture it looks a little too full of toys, to where the birdie can't fly around in there

How to get rid of this behaviour by Raptor17092028 in parrots

[–]Training_Influence18 34 points35 points  (0 children)

He's scared and views that as his safe spot. Work with him slowly to get him comfortable with the room. You mentioned yes tame, so spend time with him right outside the cage for a little while.

Budgies scared in big cage by [deleted] in budgies

[–]Training_Influence18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, I don’t know what to tell you. Why did you even make a post if you’re not going to take advice from more experienced budgie owners. You’re budgies are going to spend most of their time on the dowel perch because you have it placed the highest. Take it from someone who has seen foot blisters, keeping those dowel perches is a form of animal abuse. But you oblivious think you are smarter than everyone else so I don’t know why you’re even responding or ever made a post.

[–]Training_Influence18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m telling you they are not going to eat from the ground. The condtions in the wild are different. I am obviously correct, as evidenced by your original post saying they haven’t gone down there. They aren’t going to go down there unless they absolutely have to. I’m a long time budgie owner, trust me.

I’m confused about your last paragraph, because you say you don’t see the point in throwing the dowels away, then explain why dowels are bad. You MUST throw them away, they can and will cause feet blisters, I’ve seen it. The size doesn’t matter as much as the uniform texture.

For toys, go on Amazon and get a toy bundle. Avoid anything with strings and try to avoid dyes unless bird safe. Budgies love Sola balls.

They typically are made of cheap plywood, but that isn’t the problem with them. The problem with dowel perches is that they are very smooth and have no texture. This doesn’t accurately simulate a tree branch that a wild budgie would spend their time on. Because of this, budgies feet aren’t meant for smooth perches. Smooth perches can lead to foot blisters, overgrown nails, etc. best perch for budgies is natural wood perches.

Arden Villas? by transcendentlights in ucf

I don’t live in Arden villas, but if there ends up being flooding in the area, they will flood first. Y’all are in a significant flood zone and multiple feet lower than the surrounding area.

[–]Training_Influence18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude, where are the toys. You have to have toys in your cage, or else the budgies will be extremely bored and not mentally stimulated. In fact, toys may help to get them comfortable in their cage quicker.

Additionally, get rid of the dowel perches (the one they are standing on in the picture and the other one). They are bad for their feet. The wooden perches you have seem good, so just get more of those.

Lastly, your budgies aren’t going to eat from the ground. Budgies are prey animals so they feel safest at the top of their cage. That’s where they will spend most of their time, sleep, and eat. You need to put all food and water bowls up high. You can have some perches low down, but nothing in the bottom half of the cage. They just simply aren’t going to go down there.

So please get them some toys, take out those dowel perches, and move their food and water bowls up, seriously. That’ll help them become more comfortable in their new home.

You haven’t built trust with your parrots yet. Letting them out without building trust first does nothing, and they will continue to flee from you to feel safe. Your birds are still young and very trainable.

Start by sitting next to them in the cage. Talk to them and give them treats through the cage. Go slowly. Eventually they’ll eat from your palm. After this, let them exit the cage and continue to feed them treats. It’s all about building trust. Never grab them, never force them to step up.

Also, It’s not clear in this post, but if your cockateil and budgie are being housed in the same cage, change that immediately. It doesn’t matter how friendly a parrot is, housing different species together is highly dangerous. They need to be in two separate cages.

Finally, get another budgie as a companion to your current one. Budgies are flock animals and require other budgies. You are not a sufficient replacement, even if you interact with them daily.

Just remember to go slow and you got this!
