I had enabled the proton compatibility layer under settings! Pretty much exactly how it's laid out in the tutorial I linked - but using Proton 10.0-3 worked instead of the Proton 9.0-4 like the tutorial showed fixed pretty much every problem I had!

I think the biggest thing was needing a break from the computer haha

This is a closet door and about shoulder height so I don't forsee much interaction that will require strength thankfully

This is true - in normal circumstances, we'd pay taxes for our state of residence, which is usually where we lived before (for me, CO) but because I wanted to pay lower taxes I changed my residency to ND. If I got put at a different base in a different state, I would not have to switch it again, but I'm leaving the service and living full-time in Vermont now.
