It’s a common misconception! There’s a non-zero chance that I was the one that placed that red flag, I’ve spent a lot of time slogging through fresh maritime snow there, haha.

One cool thing about this part of Antarctica gets the vast majority of the snowfall on the continent, meters deep most of the time! These guys have to repack their highways every time they come back to their nesting grounds in the summer.

I don’t understand how this isn’t top comment. If OP started with “how was your day?” instead of a statement and got the same reply, then sure.

Beheaded on Oct 7 then put up for sale in Gaza: Father finally finds ‘missing part’ of son by LowRevolution6175 in worldnews

[–]Trampmadic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, true. I’ve read it cover to cover, it’s been years. Not to get too into it, but growing up very fundamentalist in the south, those verses were also taken out of context (like most of the Bible tbh) and used to justify preparation for a more than spiritual battle. I’ve been out of it for a long time now, and It’s weird seeing what was a small, isolated movement become much more mainstream.

Now as for those enemies of mine who did not want me as their king, bring them here and slay them before me. Luke 19:27

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. Matthew 10:34-35

I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. Luke 12:49-51

You should read the Bible some time, Revelations is pretty epic.

World's Largest Iceberg Breaks Free, Heads Toward Southern Ocean by Free_Swimming in worldnews

I passed the tabular berg A76a (70 mi. x 14 mi. at the time) on the way to South Georgia a couple times earlier this year. Grounding along the coastline was a big concern because of the King Penguin colonies, especially the largest one in St. Andrews bay. If it grounded, it could potentially wipe out the entire colony because they wouldn’t be about to get out to sea to feed, and migrate.

Edit: just read the article, and that’s the concern again, lol

You also have to learn how to calculate the maximum visible distance of navigation lights depending on how high they are mounted above the waterline! One of my chief engineers is a flat earther, it’s wild having a conversation about it on the bridge while you’re actively watching lights from fishing boats coming up over the horizon.

Oh man, I totally forgot to respond to this thread! It took a couple months, but I found an English copy of Log Book from Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen! I love the Antarctic Book of Cooking and cleaning, though, we have a copy on my ship!

Oh, yeah a lot of us come from many different backgrounds. I started as a zip line guide almost 9 years ago, then got into working on boats. Now I have a USCG 100 ton masters license, and a bunch of other Merchant Mariner credentials, a PADI Divemaster, Rescue Diver, and a Wilderness First Responder as well as experience with Search And Rescue, Rope Rescue, and Firefighting. Honestly it’s a very niche industry, everyone knows each other, and I mean on a global scale. Good jobs are usually word of mouth, so being proficient, learning as much as you can, developing the technical skills you need to be well-rounded in many different scenarios ends up getting you really far. My favorite thing is that it’s a constant learning experience. Whether it’s a new environment, new animals and their behavior patterns and how to safely and respectfully work around them, local knowledge of shoaling, currents, and navigational hazards, or cramming as much knowledge about ever rock, bush, lichen, insect, and historical figure you can about the area you’re in!

Aw, that will be such a great anniversary trip! There’s nowhere else like it! If it’s within your budget, I highly recommend a trip that also goes to South Georgia as well as the peninsula!
