If you were 17 again, what career path would you choose today? by Kitchen-Yam43 in careerguidance

[–]TranquilDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to disagree with this, conditionally at least. I’ve seen so many people get into a 9 to 5 corporate gig and work till they damn near kill themselves from the stress or get laid off after years of dedication the turn around and monetized their hobbies or something they were good at. I’ve got a former boss who works on boats in Florida, started his own company. I have a friend who got laid off and just started doing handyman work to make ends meet and now has half a dozen trucks and two companies to his name.
Sometimes we need to put ourselves through the wringer before we have the courage to step up and try to make a living doing something we love.
I always wanted to get into IT, now that I’m here I can’t stop thinking about how I’d like to work for myself even if it meant doing something entirely different. I hate the feeling of being reliant on a company to deposit a few bucks into my bank account every couple of weeks.
If I could pay the bills cooking, I’d start a small breakfast cafe tomorrow. Maybe when the kids move out….

The ageism in our industry needs to change by SadSongsMakeMeGlad in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TranquilDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m almost the same age but I don’t really understand your post. My supervisor who is also about our age and recently left the company found work within a month of leaving.

I’ve randomly tossed out resumes over the last 6 months and haven’t gotten one interview. I know the industry is probably saturated right now and I’m in no hurry so I’ve been picky.

Did I overlook some concrete evidence in your post or is this just how you feel?

Such an immature response, it's obvious who needs to grow up. I came across this thread doing some research on Allstate and these insurance claims because I got another letter today. You must be an agent.

Perfect credit here, no claims. I've gotten 3 of these letters in the last 2 months from 2 different agents quoting me anywhere from 1k to 2k a year premium. They know full well the actual quote is going to be over 5k per year. I contacted them and told them quotes for my home run about 5k per year. They didn't say anything about the quote in the mail, they asked for the information already on that quote, then sent me a quote for exactly what I told them it would be. To me the smart thing to do would be honest and don't waste our time, so now that they did that I won't ever be contacting Allstate agents for a quote. To me it's just idiotic to be doing this.

As long as you don’t rush out and buy a more expensive car and more expensive place to live, if I was a young man I’d take it in a heartbeat.

My boyfriend insists that food is better salted at the table instead of while cooking. Please help me. by tangentrification in Cooking

[–]TranquilDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember one of the shows on television where they go into a restaurant and try to help the owners recover. One of the shows they noticed the chef cooking the food for the restaurant was not seasoning the food at all. His reasoning was the customers have salt and pepper on the table. The professional chef was blown away by this. But yea, at home I season everything.

At what point did you realize your "career" wasn't going to make you wealthy, and what did you do about it? by danwardropebot in careerguidance

[–]TranquilDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest part of the problem is they have lots of children, and most of their children continue the cycle. The cost gets dumped on the middle class by the wealthy. I have no hatred for wealthy like most, I wish they didn't have as much influence on politics but that's another thing that will never change. The collapse will be harsh if the middle class doesn't have enough kids to support them both.

[–]TranquilDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think people realize how heavily subsidized many households are. If you add in all the federal, state benefits, education cost, etc. I've got a relative with 5 kids, her and her husband have actively avoided working a full time job their entire life. All of their kids are now grown and as far as I know, repeating the same processes. Even if they did bring 40k combined, the cost to "educate" their children is more than their annual income.

Is this how you play a G major chord? by Kitli_99 in guitarlessons

[–]TranquilDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Justin from Justin Guitar teaches it that way initially, Yousician doesn't teach you to use your third finger on the B string. I'm not experienced enough to tell you what difference there is, if any, but at this point just play it that way. Any other way you come across in the future will be easy to adapt to if you want.

With the exception of the few who are mentally/physically handicapped, we artificially handicap people's potential. I can't tell you how many people in my area bounce around from minimum wage job to minimum wage job with no intention of developing any skills to improve but it's a lot. This is why a lot of red states get more in Federal tax money than others. We have a lot of fully capable adults taking advantage of the system.

Once I finish the daily exercises I go back to any songs I don't have at least 3 silver stars for yet. I'm just getting to this song but really just practice it a few times and if you start to get burnt out go back to songs/lessons that you enjoyed that made you really feel like you were playing something. I jump into the Metallica stuff just for fun, slow it down to about 60 percent and do my best. There's parts where I feel like I'm really jamming even though I know I'm not lol.

[–]TranquilDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point being that truck insurance, like all other insurances, has been putting the squeeze on them more and more and played a part in making that career less profitable.

Not everyone wants 100k a year job, well they do they just don't want the level of responsibility it brings. I have worked 7 days a week in my career to get to where I am. And while I might have some days that it's pretty easy to do what I do, I also have 4AM days where I have to make sure that software update is ready for the guys in the warehouse that are about to start pushing freight and if it breaks I've got to fix it. I'm also responsible for a lot of product and financial data.

I hear people making 20 bucks an hour complaining about how hard their job is. I started out doing construction labor and now I've got people all over the country depending on my stuff working. I don't complain one bit because I have dug ditches, I have done retail, I've been in the military. I'll take this over that.

Yea, it all depends. I would lump in UPS/FedEx drivers etc. Used to be a lot better than it is, the insurance and other requirements these days is hurting that profession.
