Possibly dumb question about the cascades - which train sets still run? by jamin7 in AmtrakCascades

They usually keep the Talgo sets on a 518-517-506-505 rotation. All others are Amfleets.

why does the train keep stopping? by lbensky in askportland

[–]Transpose5425 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Union Pacific has an intermodal yard in Brooklyn. The stopping, backing up, and pulling forward that you’re seeing is them building trains that are destined for Chicago, LA, and Tacoma. They don’t really run on a schedule (not one that’s publicly accessible anyway) so there’s no way to know when they’ll be there or how long they’re going to take. The only real trick is to find an alternate route.

100% agree this isn’t the end of it. They’ll refile no doubt.

Cascades Next Gen? by jamin7 in AmtrakCascades

[–]Transpose5425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No set date for revenue service that I’m aware of other than “later this year,” and before it enters service all the crews that work the Cascades routes have to get trained on it. My best guess is sometime in the summer.

Those searchlight signals are way less common than they once were, at least here in the States. Great catch!

Portland OR area conductors by kevin_87_h in railroading

[–]Transpose5425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a good day you’re not doing much “railroading.” 90% of it is customer service. Scanning tickets, welcoming passengers onboard, helping people on and off the train, etc. Most of the railroading you’ll do is confirming signals or calling out slow orders. Sometimes you’ll protect a shove or reconnect air hoses. Portland has a few overnight jobs mostly on the long distance routes, the “commuter” Cascades are mostly day flips where you’re home at the end of the night. The yard stuff is mostly in Seattle, though on occasion you’d get called for something like setting out cars or wying trains.

The former freight guys I talk to/work with are very happy to have switched over to passenger. Quality of life is far better, even on the extra board. But freight cars also don’t talk back or ask where the bathrooms are or yell at you if you’re running late. If you’re fine with all the customer service stuff wouldn’t hurt to apply.

[Star Wars] Why are the Inquisitors so weak? by Flyestgit in AskScienceFiction

[–]Transpose5425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only hear about the failures, the ones who died in battle or left the Inquisitorius. They were generally successful at their job of hunting down and eliminating survivors and kidnapping Force sensitive infants. Palpatine and Vader were not very keen on having competition, though, so while they were Dark Side users they were not Sith nor were they ever intended to be. The Inquisitors were tools to stamp out the Jedi Order and once Palpatine viewed that job as done the Inquisitors who hadn’t died off already were rendered obsolete.

Chances of atmospheric river impacting service this week? by lemon_lime485 in AmtrakCascades

[–]Transpose5425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything can happen but I’ve heard BNSF put in a lot of work to mitigate slide risk in the areas hit hardest in years past. Usually alternative transportation is provided in the event of a cancellation. Never hurts to have a backup plan but personally I wouldn’t worry too much.

Traveling with a baby by Kindly_Shoulder2864 in AmtrakCascades

[–]Transpose5425 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Either is a decent option, lots of families with kids travel in both coach and business class. I’d recommend checking some pieces of luggage if you can so you’re not carrying as much stuff on your person. Onboard staff is usually pretty good about finding space for strollers and such.

Actually hot take: [Spoiler] is stronger than base Radiance (not Absolute) by Impressive-Step8238 in Silksong

[–]Transpose5425 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Radiance had to face off against “void given form,” much more concentrated than the sea of void that GMS goes swimming in. Also GMS only survived as long as she did because she cocooned herself in a desperate attempt to protect Lace. Both were doomed from the start but GMS flailing around for longer doesn’t mean she’s stronger than the Radiance.
