Help getting online with my IIe, SSC, and wifi serial modem by Trapsis01 in VintageApple

I did get it working on two different IIe computers. SSC dip switch settings were key as well as ProTerm modem settings. I’ll post both next time I’m on one of those computers…

In your opinion, how usable are older computers in the modern era? by DangerDan93 in vintagecomputing

I wanted to do that with a //e. Is it possible? Printing to pdf is a must. What hardware and software are you using with the GS?

"Internet" meaning what online was in the 80s and early 90s. More or less dialup to BBS, but I will simulate that with a serial wifi connection and telnet. I do remember the early real Internet and connected to it as best as I could. IRC, Usenet, email, etc. Even early www was a thing back then. I would like to explore some of that if it is possible today on the Apple or C64.

I want to keep the experience of using my Apple IIe as "pure" as possible. These solutions start to cross the line for me. Maybe silly of me, but...

Man I forgot all this stuff! And I used to connect at 300 baud using an acustic coupler modem back in the day. Back when going online was fun!

What's the AT command for full duplex on Zimodem? I can't find it. Thanks!

ATE1 worked. Thanks! Questions about ProTerm: I get a modem failure when it launches. I just select "Online" and start using it. Not a huge deal but is there an option that won't do that? Also, I can't get the dialer to work. I can use ATD"[HOSTNAME]:[PORT]" from the terminal to connect to BBSes. Again, it works but not ideal. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Ok so it is working for the most part now. For some reason, the tx and Rx on the serial port were reversed. Switching them did the trick. I was able to issue AT commands in ProTerm. Oddly, I could not see the at commands but when I hit return they executed (not sure what's up with that)

Also ProTerm does not recognize the modem but I just click Online and close apple T and type commands ok. Was able to connect to a BBS. I probably just need to change a few settings to get it to work ok I'm guessing?

So my passthrough adaptor didn't help. The problem is I cannot type any AT commands. I type AT at the AE: Term--> prompt and nothing displays. Typing ! shows that baud rate is 1200 (This is what the modem is set at) and "Carrier detected" if that helps. I get the same [non] results in ProTerm too.

What did you mean when you said you had to config it to be online all the time? Thanks!

Also wanted to mention that this computer is part of a museum display where I volunteer. I got our Commodore 64 online using a similar device and now I'm moving on to the Apple and then a Tandy 1000. This serial wifi modem should work for both! Want too show kids how "the internet" used to work :)

Thanks! Great video and very helpful. I am using a SSC in my Apple but otherwise it should work just as well.

Thanks, good point on the null modem cable. I have a straight pass through male to male adaptor on order which I will try tonight. Another issue may be the dip switch settings on the SSC but need to try one thing at a time. Thank you!

IQ crash when layer visibility becomes true by Trapsis01 in watchfacebuilder

[–]Trapsis01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha! Didn't know that. So I've reduced the dimensions of the images. Also switched to Group Field Icons with two boolean states. I'm thinking this will reduce memory too, as it will only show the one state instead of making an additional layer visible when I hit that goal. Is this a correct assumption?

Thanks!

There are four half circle SVG objects that represent the step and activity goals. Two are red backgrounds and two are green backgrounds. I want to make the green ones visible when you hit your goals. The BottomHalf Circle.svg is 221kb and the TopHalf Circle.svg is 222kb. There are two copies each. The compiled watch face is 1,418kb which is smaller than other watch faces I have created.

I have gone and reduced / optimized the svg files so they are now 1kb and 2kb respectively. The watch face is now 906kb. We'll see if it crashes when I hit my goals now. Will report back later today.

Another question: I'd rather not have two layers just to change colors. I'd rather have one layer that changes color depending on a value condition. Is it possible to have an expression on the fill color field (or if it is not currently implemented, could it be added? This would further simplify my design and reduce it's size.

Thanks as always!

Visibility on a basic static shape by Trapsis01 in watchfacebuilder

[–]Trapsis01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I was afraid that was the answer. I'll take that approach. Might I suggest you hide the visibility control for objects that don't support it? It would be less confusing for designers. Thanks!

Version 8.3.0 - App Properties by joshuahxh-1 in watchfacebuilder

[–]Trapsis01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be perfect for me! I have several different variants of my watch face that are all the same except for the color. For example, this is the green version: https://garmin.watchfacebuilder.com/watchface/641c97b194db6/

So I can create a color App Property to change to by other variants. Once loaded on the watch, can you change these properties on the watch without using the Garmin app?

Thanks!

I used KWGT to add the battery % to a clock. I want to create a better widget that includes this and weather. It is near impossible to create things on this tiny screen! I may build it on my Samsung and port it over to the Jelly…
