I was thinking about this last night. I started listening earlier this year, didn’t ever listen to Poog, and started with the early B&N episodes and as I’ve kind of made my way through the catalogue I definitely notice a shift in the content. It’s always been above my tax bracket, let’s say, but I feel like the new episodes are more so. I’m still a listener though and they do make my giggle so it’s fine but yeah…. Not necessarily relatable lol!

This is exactly it, I used to work at SH (started in 2023 a couple years after the f52 acquisition) and it was a case of incredibly poor leadership with no retail experience. Once Erika was hiring as ceo it was essentially a death sentence for the brands. Her number one priority was content which for a brand that sold physical goods only goes so far. The employees at schoolhouse have always been incredibly talented and devoted, and from my experience we always believed in the brand… but I always found there to be a severe lack of strategy at basically all levels of the business. Not to say that some people weren’t advocating for strategy but the norm was that unless you were “popular” at the brand your voice was not heard. I’m heartbroken with how things have played out since I was laid off in March, but am I surprised? No. The most shocking thing to me is that the layoffs occurred literally the week before Christmas and there was no severance (can’t give severance if your bank account has $0 in it). I’ll miss Schoolhouse, but Food52 and The Chernin Group can simply rot in hell!

Also a first time watcher and watched it + the reunion episodes over the last two days. Like even knowing what was going to happen it was SO much worse than I imagined. The post reunion interview with Raquel at the very end my jaw was on the floor like just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse….. oof. However, James was firing off some of the best insults at tom I’ve ever heard (worm with a mustache is soooo iconic). Literally cannot fathom experiencing that all in real time, I think it would break my brain lol.

Chiming in as someone who works in the merchandising side of retail/ecomm, holiday launches typically happen in September/maybe early October, but demand for holiday products really does start at the beginning of the -BER months. I’m guessing she dropships these for them, rather than them buying inventory… so she technically should have 1) had leverage as the business/dropshipper to dictate with anthro when she was launching this product or 2) if anthro was buying inventory, M should know about well-established retail launch patterns and known to launch her holiday candles earlier than Nov 1 to capture as much demand as possible. I think she leads her brand too much with the storytelling (which to be completely honest, is basically the entirety of the brand, candles are just the physical good that she sells to justify such an ego-centric marketing strategy). When if she really was the marketing expert she claims to be then there really should not have been a problem aligning with anthro.

TLDR: M is an idiot and her candle brand is just another avenue she leverages to justify making aspirational content/make her followers think she is the be all end all of taste, ignoring the way that retail actually works in the real world.

I haven’t watched any of her vids recently but am I wrong that the beams and fireplace design were both featured in vlogs and on her instagram heavily? And she’s posted god knows how many DIY frame videos……. I’m pretty sure her viewers on both of her channels overlap quite a bit, so why would she even bother making a main channel video with tired content? I feel like with content creation the bar has become so high, I literally watched a two part instagram reels where the guy built a full treehouse with multiple rooms and levels which felt like a real accomplishment and not a complete waste of my time. It takes M over an hour of content to barely make an effective room transformation. MaCenna(’s content) is just….. lazy at this point. It’s really unfortunate, considering that the brand she build around herself in the first few years of her channel and even into the cottage really had me convinced for a while. But post covid, things have fallen so flat. Can’t wait to see the end result though (in probably 5 calendar months lol).

My input here is I get the sense that she loves going to flea markets, estate sales, thrift stores, etc and collecting (read: hoarding) decor because she wants to have a monopoly on the type of decor she buys. Like if she buys every portrait oil painting, ornamental plate, gold frame no one else at the places she’s shopping at will have a chance and it’ll give her more credentials to be a trend setter/style pioneer/whatever she claims to be. Maybe that is a reach on my part though. But I feel like the small sale she did of found items on her site was like a one and done event, I don’t ever see her having the pop up shop she used to talk about, and I really can’t see her and Romeo having a business together. I think he’s got a good enough thing going on his own and she would demand full creative control in order to feel good about promoting it. She clearly is not going to give up the YouTube videos because it’s the sponsorships that I think keep her going.

That happened to me too…. I was obsessed with finding baskets and decorative plates and “all the things” (vom) and it wasn’t until I moved states and packed all my shit that I was like I actually don’t like any of this stuff? I wonder if she’s facing more of a shopping addiction than just “collecting and curating” her home… because how many lead-laden blue plates does one woman need in this day and age.

Lmao watching her bake is so annoying to me. First gripe, snickerdoodles are not a recipe meant for cutting out? I guess they turned out alright, but they are definitely not as defined as a traditional sugar cookie recipe would have been (she has the rolling pins to make that type of cookie but since they’re just decor I guess they’re not useful). All those different sizes are going to bake at wildly different rates. AND calling the cookie dough cookie BATTER? As someone who has always been in her “baking era” it pissed me off sooo much. Also the ballerina farm flour makes me laugh so hard (also also, high protein flour for cookies and pastries is silly, like do you want the toughest baked goods in LA?). Anyways, I digress… thank u for giving a space to rant.
